CHATSWORTH (CBS) — Officials reported Wednesday evening that a 3-year-old girl was critically injured following a fall from a third-floor balcony of an apartment building in Chatsworth.

The girl’s brother, 18-months, was also injured but not seriously. He’s in fair condition at an area hospital.

Firefighters were called at 6:30 p.m. to the building at 21031 Parthenia St., between Canoga and De Soto avenues, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The paramedics were met by the father who brought his children to the curb and they were rushed to Northridge Hospital Medical Center. The father rode with them.

It was not clear why or how the children fell, Humphrey said.

Where were the parents and why would you leave the kids be out on the balcony unsupervised in the first place? My parents live in that same building and it is a pretty long way down from the third floor, especially if you’re on the part of the building that faces the parking lot which is 4 stories tall. I hope the little ones will be ok, my prayers are with them.

crazy… it was in canoga park not chatsworth… i was just in the apartment RIGHT under on the 2nd floor we didnt notice anything until we saw police and news vans everywhere. they fell in an area where there is dirt and leaves, not concrete. this whole apartment complex is shabby and looks subpar, like most large capacity multi unit apartment complexes. They loosely installed (with zip ties) large white screens with a x pattern that covers the entire patio for shade/privacy, the kids could have climbed it…. but then again, i dont think an 18 year old could do that. I think it was the bedroom window, the only thing separating the outside from the 3rd floor bedroom window is a loosely fitting screen a few feet off the ground. A bed or a couch would make it easy for kids to be at the same level as the window.

Its very Weird why it was unclear how they fell.. hopefully these kids will be okay…

I am a neighbor and these windows are extremely low to the ground. The apartment does not have a balcony and most likely the children fell from the bedroom window. I see these children constantly and wish them a Speedy recovery.
