AGOURA HILLS (CBS) — Witnesses helped authorities track down a hit-and-run driver who killed a 44-year-old bicyclist in Agoura Hills.

A woman was reportedly driving east on Agoura Road Saturday afternoon in a 2002 Mercedes-Benz when she struck James Laing, 46, of West Hills, who was on a bicycle, riding in the same direction.

Laing died at the scene, just east of Agoura Hills city limits and several hundred feet from the driveway to the Malibu-Lost Hills sheriff’s station.

California Highway Patrol officials say the motorist drove away from the scene, but was followed by witnesses, who told authorities she stopped in a nearby parking lot.

The driver was detained by sheriff’s deputies until CHP officers arrived. The woman, originally identified as S.D. Whitmansegal, 44, of Woodland Hills, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, hit and run and gross vehicular manslaughter.

The Los Angeles County jail system did not list anyone by that name, but did report a woman named Stephanie Segal, 44, was being held on felony charges after CHP officers arrested her at the crash scene Saturday night.

Segal is being held on $250,000 bail, according to jail records.

How many more innocent people have to die in order to enact legislation stating that if you are caught drinking and driving your drivers license will be PERMANENTLY revoked? This will not eliminate the problem but I’m sure it will slash the number of annual deaths by at least half. Instead what are we going to vote on soon…”legalizing and taxing marijuana”…”increase vehicle license fees by $18 per year to fund state parks” etc. HELLO! ANYBODY OUT THERE? INNOCENT PEOPLE ARE DIEING DUE TO PERSONAL IRRESPONSIBILITY! May this man rest in peace.

Assault with a motor vehicle is a major problem for cyclists everywhere, calling it hit-and-run is just part of the problem. if you shoot someone and they die even if you weren’t trying to shoot that particular person or anybody, you get charged with a felony that carries mandatory jail or prison time. Motor vehicles are many times more deadly than a gun, why is death resulting from improper use of a motor vehicle not punished as harshly as death by guns? There is a Constitutional right to keep and bear arms, and a right to travel under your own power, but nothing about keeping deadly devices for transportation as a right.
