Stolen Car Suspect Arrested After Deputy Shooting

HUNTINGTON PARK (AP) — Investigators say a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy fired at the driver of a stolen vehicle after the suspect ignored orders to stay inside the car and reached into his waistband.

Deputy Benjamin Grubb says 27-year-old Eric Valdez was behind the wheel of stolen car stopped late Tuesday in Huntington Park.

The deputy fired, but didn't hit anything, when Valdez got out the vehicle.

The Sheriff's Department says Thursday that three people inside the car with Valdez were arrested and booked for investigation of receiving stolen property. Valdez, who ran away when the deputy fired, was arrested at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday for investigation of vehicle theft.

The sheriff's Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating.
