GARDEN GROVE (AP) — Crystal Cathedral has filed for bankruptcy in Southern California after months of trying to overcome mounting debt.

KNX 1070’s Ron Kilgore Reports

The mega-church, birthplace of the “Hour of Power” televangelist broadcast, announced its filing Monday as it deals with a $55 million debt.

The Orange County-based church, founded in the mid-1950s by Robert H. Schuller, earlier this year ordered major layoffs. It also cut the number of stations airing the “Hour of Power” and sold property to stay afloat.

In addition, the 10,000-member church canceled this year’s “Glory of Easter” pageant, which attracts thousands of visitors and is a regional holiday staple.

They should get Robert Jr. back. He was a sound preacher preaching Biblical doctrine, totally unlike his father. So sad…

Like father like son, they’re greedy, always fight each other for money. There should be an investigation looking into millions of dollars contributed to the church. Where did they go??????

Robert H. Schuller, should be investigated. The church may go bankruptcy however Mr. Schuller is not. May be I am thinking wrong and I am judging him however look what happened in City of Bell. I hope that Los Angeles Times will bring out the truth! How about his personal or close family banking accounts, properties and other assets?

This is what happens when a church bases its foundation on the personality of its preacher instead of the rock- Jesus Christ.

  9. lara says:

Schuller built this church on faith, but greed tore it down…

It’s no wonder why people shy away from religion, all you hear these days is disgusting acts, corruption and GREED…

What God hath made he can taketh away…

This just proves the old saw, “If you live in a glass house you shouldn’t throw stones.”

  11. BaldEagle says:

Borrowing large sum of money for ministry is a bad idea! The church leaders must learn not to make rosy forecast for incomes but to live within its means! Good accountability for every dollar spent also help! This is going to make the church look bad for mismanagement! Hope/pray that the church will learn a good lesson and not to repeat the same mistakes anymore

As a true believer in Jesus Christ and a listener to the programs of the Chystal Cathedral for years I am truly sorry to hear this and will be praying for Dr. Schuller, his wife, and the congregation.
