New Phishing Scheme Targeting Taxpayers

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Yet another phishing scheme is preying on unsuspecting consumers, this time in the guise of a tax agency.

The Board of Equalization issued a warning Wednesday of emails that appear to be from a tax agency, notifying a taxpayer that their federal Electronic Funds Transfer or EFT payments did not go through. The email then links taxpayers to another website, asking for more information.

The email is not from a tax agency, the federal IRS nor the state's Board of Equalization. The Board of Equalization says taxpayers should not click on the link or respond to the sender.

Taxpayers with questions about their EFT payments can call the Board of Equalization Taxpayer Information Section at 800-400-7115 or the EFT Helpline at (916) 327-4229.
