Beloved Dog Found 12 Days After Truck Is Stolen

ANAHEIM (AP) — When a thief stole Don Peck's pickup truck, they took his best friend too -- his 8-year-old shih tzu named Kiwi.

Both were stolen in Anaheim on Sept. 22. Three days later, police found the truck but no Kiwi.

Daughter-in-law Valada Smith in Indiana helped the 77-year-old retired engineer search for Kiwi. While Peck posted signs, slept fitfully and lost 12 pounds, Smith scoured the Internet every night when her waitress shift ended.

After 12 days, she found Kiwi up for adoption at a Downey shelter.

Authorities told The Orange County Register they found Kiwi wandering on a street the day after the theft and miles away from where he was stolen.

The shelter was closed Monday, but they let Peck in anyway, much to Kiwi's tail-wagging, tongue-licking delight.
