WALNUT (AP) — A Southern California college wrestler collapsed during a weekend tournament and later died.

Rio Hondo College president Ted Martinez Jr. said 20-year-old Jesus Cruz, a popular second-year wrestler and captain of the Whittier school’s wrestling team, died Saturday after collapsing at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Cruz was on the mat with an opponent when he collapsed. The Los Angeles Times says he was pronounced dead at San Dimas Community Hospital.

The remainder of the all-day tournament was canceled.

Grief counselors are planning to meet with Rio Hondo coaches, players and students.

Hmmm last time i heard something like this happened it turned about to be a previously undetected heart defect. Think this is the first wrestler too die though, its usually football players. Sucks either way. Damn shame. Best wishes to the family.

It’s Rio Hondo, not Rio Honda…

Wow, so sad. To spend 20 years watching your flesh and blood grow into an adult and in a blink of an eye lose them is beyond words, my deepest condolonces to the family. The good always die young.
