People Kick Cars To The Curb For PARK(ing) Day

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Cars won't be king in Los Angeles for at least one day.

Los Angeles artists, activists and citizens will take back their parking spaces today for the annual "PARK(ing) Day." Instead of allowing cars to sit at a parking meter, people will temporarily transform these spaces into public parks and a place to meet with other like-minded folks.

PARK(ing) Day will be strongly represented in downtown's Fashion District, where AECOM's parking lot will morph into an open space for people, rather than cars, until 3 p.m.

PARK(ing) Day was invented by Rebar, a San Francisco-based art and design studio, in 2005 and has evolved into a worldwide grassroots movement. Last year, more than 700 "PARK" installations blossomed in more than 140 cities in 21 countries on six continents.
