OC Metrolink Train Kills 2, Injures 1

MISSION VIEJO (CBS/AP) — Two people were killed and another injured Thursday morning when they were struck by a Metrolink train in South Orange County, say authorities.

It was first reported that the victims were both teenagers but by Thursday evening, officials announced the dead were actually Daniel Akins, a 22-year-old Mission Viejo man, and Anastasia Bolton, a 17-year-old woman. A 27-year-old woman was also hurt but her injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Mike Yeun says two people died at the scene and a female patient was hospitalized with arm and leg injuries.

Metrolink says its train service in the area is being delayed and buses are taking passengers between the Laguna Niguel and Irvine stations.

The circumstances of the deaths are under investigation.

The train's 67 passengers were also uninjured.

The survivor told investigators she and her friends did not hear the train coming. Officials believe the threesome might have fallen asleep on the tracks.

Michele Gile, reporting for KCAL 9 and CBS 2, said the victims may have been dragged for as much as 300 feet before the train came to a complete stop.
