Leopard Sharks Show Up In Dozens At Marina Del Rey

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. (AP) — Marina del Rey lifeguards have been doing double duty since a school of leopard sharks arrived about a month ago and attracted crowds of curious onlookers.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Danny Douglas says lifeguards at Mother's Beach are watching to make sure no one harasses the docile sharks.

Officials say there are 50 or 60 of the sharks, some up to 5 feet long. They swim in single file or in circles and are not considered aggressive.

As word spread about them, photographers and nature lovers have flocked to the beach.

One expert believes the sharks are females and their offspring who have found a place they feel safe.
