What You're Eating: Menus With A Cause

As the weather starts to cool down around the Southland, restaurants are creating special menus that feature the warmth of the season. As the holidays quickly begin to approach, it is a great time to start giving back to the community by drinking pink and eating bagels for breast cancer research or helping to end child malnutrition with PB&J for Good.

During the month of October, Sol Cocina, will donate 100 percent of the proceeds of the $10 "Ta-Ta Tini" to Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The "Ta-Ta Tini" is made with Herradura 100 percent Blue Agave Tequila, infused for two days with fresh watermelon and hibiscus flowers. Then it is shaken to perfection with lime juice and agave nectar.

On Oct. 18, Panera Bread will donate 100 percent of the sales from their Pink Ribbon Bagels to benefit the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation. The freshly baked signature bagel features cherry chips, dried cherries, cranberries, vanilla, honey, and brown sugar. Throughout the rest of the month of October, 10 cents from each Pink Ribbon Bagel sold will be donated to the foundation.

Owners Enzo DeMuro and Terry Antonelli are proud to introduce new vegan and gluten-free items to their menu. Some of the new additions include Ai Legumi, sauteed kale topped with marinated quinoa and Carpaccio Ideale that comes with paper-thin slices of Portobello mushroom topped with arugula, capers, red onion and hearts of palm. The new menu items are clearly marked for guests with a "V" for vegetarian, "VE" for vegan and "GF" for gluten-free.

Top Orange County chefs are coming together to help raise funds to end Severe Acute Malnutrition worldwide from Oct. 16 through 25. During the 10-day campaign, the participating chefs will add a specialty PB&J to their menus, and a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit StopSAM.org. The participating restaurants include Chef Noah Blom with ARC, Chef Rachel Klemek with Blackmarket Bakery, Chef Amar Santana with Broadway, Chef Adam Navidi with Green2Go, Chef Greg Daniels with Haven Gastropub, Chef Eric Samaniego with Little Sparrow, Chef Cathy Pavlos with LUCCA, Chef Diego Velasco with Memphis, Chef Greg Daniels with Provisions Market, Chef Andrew Gruel with Slapfish, Chef Greg Daniels with taco asylum, and Chef Yvon Goetz with The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar.

In celebration of Oktoberfest, Bayside in Newport Beach is hosting a special three-course prix-fixe Bavarian menu from through Oct. 31. The menu will feature classic Bavarian cuisine with beer and wine pairing options available. Guests will enjoy smoked trout salad, Hähnchenbrust "Cordon Bleu," and Bayrishe Weisswurst. There will be live music for guest to enjoy this special menu that is priced at $39.95 per person.
