The Actors’ Gang
9070 Venice Blvd
Culver City, CA 90232
The Actors’ Gang was co-founded in 1981 by Tim Robbins, who still serves as the artistic director. After spending many successful years in Hollywood the Gang relocated to the classic, 99 seat Ivy Substation in newly beautified downtown Culver City. Built in 1907 the Ivy Substation is registered as a National Historic Cultural Monument. Though the company has been around for almost thirty years, their mission has stayed the same “to create bold, original works for the stage and daring reinterpretations of the classics.” So, we thank you Actors’ Gang, for making everything old new again.
Circus Theatricals at The Hayworth
2511 Wilshire Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90057
Circus Theatricals may be a staple on the Los Angeles stage scene but it was actually founded in New York City in 1983. In 1995 founder and artistic director Jack Stehlin ventured west and set up residence in Los Angeles. They have been presenting eminent and experimental theater ever since. Circus Theatricals considers “their studio ensemble to be the engine of their creativity and the true source of their talent.” One notable member, Alfred Molina, has graced the award winning stages of the historic Hayworth Theater since the company took over the space in 2005. What can we say? The circus is in town and hopefully it is staying in town.
Elephant Theatre Company at the Elephant Stages
6322 Santa Monica Boulevard
Los Angeles, California 90038
The Lillian Theatre sits in the heart of Hollywood and is widely considered the undisputed king of theater row. Since 1999 the Lillian has been occupied by the Elephant Theatre Company and rave reviews. They have since expanded the space and now offer four spaces in all. The Elephant Stages consist of a 99-seater, a 60-seater, a classroom space and a Lab. Arguably the most versatile company in Los Angeles, it is understood that those that know the Elephant, love the Elephant. Whether you are in the mood to laugh or cry the Elephant Stages offers something for everyone.
Sacred Fools Theater
660 N. Heliotrope Dr.
Los Angeles, CA, 90004
There is nothing foolish about the Sacred Fools. Established in 1997, they have been “creating theatre that invigorates, enlightens, and entertains” more prolifically than any company of its caliber. The Sacred Fools consistently exemplify theatre in its purest form and is run by its ensembled artists. A true collaborative, this company has carved a name for itself on the Los Angeles theater scene as a bold and eclectic company. If you are looking for something uninspired or run of the mill you may want to look elsewhere. The Sacred Fools is sure to take you on a journey that you’ll be glad you went on.
5419 W Sunset Boulevard
Los Angeles, CA 90027
Theatre 68 may be an acting company but its members like to think of it as one big, happy family. Ronnie Marmo and Danny Cistone co-founded the 68 Cent Crew in 2000 and all of their hard work has paid off. The pair transformed an old, empty warehouse at Sunset and Western into a state of the art 93-seater. Cistone, serving as Technical Director, will blow your mind with his set design. You need just sit through one production to realize the blood, sweat and tears that are put into each performance. This crew is worth much more than 68 cents.
