Every summer, OC Fair’s food vendors gather to feed the masses of hungry fair-goers. Leave your healthy eating habits behind as you munch on outrageous deep fried treats, huge BBQ turkey legs and even foods on a stick. Fridays are a special day for indecisive foodies. Vendors offer samples during the “OC Fair $2 Taste of Fair Food” from noon until 4 p.m. Perfect time for people with smaller appetites or just to get a taste before you take the plunge!
Additionally, fair guests can enjoy the Food Truck Fair from noon to 10 p.m. Food trucks will be located outside of the lifestock area inside the fair. The Lobsta Truck, Dogzilla and the White Rabbit are a few of the trucks rolling onto the fairgrounds.
The OC Fair runs now through Aug. 11. Visit OCfair.com for information on the fair as well as a complete listing of food vendors.
Summer wouldn’t be the same without the BBQ. There’s nothing like the smell of grilled food and the distinctive aroma of charcoal. Biggy’s Meat Market is the spot for the returning 17-inch “The Big Rib.” A newer menu item is the Biggy Sausage which is a two-foot smoked sausage on a stick. Santa Maria Tri-Tip serves up a delicious North Carolina-style Pulled Porked or go for the namesake Tri Tip Sandwich.
How much do people love Bacon? A lot. The OC Fair will satisfy your obsession at the Bacon A-Fair stand. Their new additions include Truffle Gouda Bacon Fries and Cheesy Bacon Bombs. Or eat like the cavemen did and gnaw on a Turkey Leg wrapped in bacon. Need more bacon? The Wild Boar Bacon on a stick is sure to make your bacon dreams come true.
Traditional pizza fans can stop at Papa Ginos or Enzio’s Pizzeria for a slice of cheesy heaven but if you enjoy creative toppings then Ten Pound Buns is the place for you. Their famous sourdough bread pizza can be ordered with ground bacon, whipped butter and Nutella. Just ask for the Bacon Nutella Bun.
Chicken Charlie’s is definitely the leader of deep-fried creations. Every year they strive to introduce a new menu item. Four new concoctions were introduced to their menu this year. You must try the Krispie Kreme Sloppy Joe, the totally fried bacon-wrapped pickle, the totally fried cookie dough or the Waffle dog. Hostess fans can reunite at Chicken Charlie’s over a deep fried Twinkie. Yes, my arteries are hardening as I write this.
Other sinfully sweets options are funnel cake, cotton candy and ice cream. Top your funnel cake with whipped cream and strawberries at the Dutchman’s Funnel Cake stand. Chocolate-covered bananas or strawberries are probably the “healthiest” dessert choice at the fair.
Pink’s Hot Dogs
A fair wouldn’t be a fair without hot dogs! Hollywood’s historic Pink’s offers their Ghiradelli hot dog this summer. Pink’s takes innovation to a new level with their beef dog topped with cream cheese, honey mustard, crumbled bacon and dark chocolate. Not that daring? Pink’s also offers a basic chili cheese dog.
Corn on the cob has to be one of the top state fair foods. Visit the Corn Shack for grilled corn on the cob. Pull back the husk and sprinkle salt, slather on the butter and welcome the sweet and savory food to your mouth. Sometimes simplicity is best.
