When the weather warms up, the beaches of Southern California fill up with beautiful bodies in swimsuits, ready to soak in the sun. Lan Tran, owner of Skinny Bitch Apparel, shows you how to make your best impression in swimwear. She says no matter what your body type, you can be confident and look your best in beachwear that suits you.
For the teenie weenie, try string bikinis
Bikinis for women are generally cut for curves. Women with petite frames often have trouble finding the right fit. Tran says a string bikini with adjustable sides and straps will fit better and look more flattering. She also suggests choosing bold prints and patterns in lieu of girlie ruffles, buttons and bows for a more grown-up look.

For the plus sized, go retro
Retro styles are trendy and fashionable and can be very flattering for plus-sized women. Tran recommends a high-waisted bottom and sweetheart neckline in a retro print. You can also find slimming suits made out of lycra or spandex. What’s hot are the two-toned, one-piece bathing suits with black on the hips and color in the middle. These give the illusion of a slimmer body.
If you’re small on top, mix it up
Women with small bustlines can wear bikinis that are different colors on the top and the bottom. This keeps the eyes from focusing on the proportional differences. Opt for padded triangle-shaped bikini tops with an underwire bra. Also, look for ruffles and bold prints that will help give you a fuller look.
Turn boyish and boxy into fit and feminine
If you’re built like a swimmer with square shoulders and flat abs, you can add some feminine curves to your frame by looking for ruffles and texture on top. An hombre fringed bikini top is trendy and can give you the appearance of a fuller chest. Choose a swimsuit with horizontal stripes to give the illusion of a curvier body. For the bottom, opt for a low-cut bikini to show off your flat and fit abs.
Check out colors and prints if you’re big on the bottom
The best way to draw the eyes away from the bottom is to attract them to the top. Find a printed and padded bikini top and couple that with a solid, dark-colored bottom. Tran suggests choosing small prints rather than large prints and staying away from boy shorts, which make your bottom appear larger. You can also find one-pieces that are cut low in the back. The lower the cut in the back, the better your bottom will look.
In the end, Tran says confidence is the most important part to looking your best in swimwear. If you love how it makes you feel, then go for it.
