Attending an outdoor sunrise service on Easter Sunday is a tradition in Southern California. There are options for all worshippers in many hallowed or beautiful locations. Just make sure you head to bed early Saturday night, because most of these services begin at 6am.

Services begin at the base of Eagle Rock at 6:00 AM. This gathering is hosted by area churches and a network called Churches Assisting Neighbors, which helps “disenfranchised people in the Eagle Rock area.”

All ages are invited to worship courtesy of Calvary Chapel and other area churches at their annual Easter Sunrise Service on Sunday, April 24th from 6:00 to 7:30AM, at the Roosevelt Bowl at Perris Hill Park, an outdoor amphitheater with seating for 1,800 people.

This is the oldest non-denominational outdoor Easter sunrise service in the US – the first was held in 1909. Services are held at the top of the mountain, so make sure you allow at least 45 minutes to walk to the top. Parking is available on the roads at the base.

This sunrise celebration, because it happens simultaneously with an event in Virginia, will be held at 9:00 AM in Los Angeles. Local knights will march in formation down the street from the Raddison Hotel to the Shrine Auditorium, and Easter services will follow. Far from the cloaked figures in the DaVinci Code, the Knights Templar is an organization that “consists of people from all walks of life, including doctors, lawyers, clergy, businessmen and entertainment personalities, all of whom profess a belief in the Christian Religion.”

Altadena Baptist Church hosts the sunrise service that begins at 6:00 AM and is followed by a fundraiser breakfast. Farnsworth Park amphitheater was made famous by the band camp scenes in “American Pie.”
