The late, great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is remembered every year on the third Monday of January. So, mark your 2017 calendar for Jan. 16 and then plan on celebrating this keen humanitarian in a number of meaningful ways. Festivities surrounding the fallen civil rights movement leader, a young activist who died for his efforts on April 4, 1968, are plentiful in the Southland, with parades and participatory events.

Celebrating one of the most historical figures of the civil rights movement, the Peace & Unity Parade will kick off at 10:30 am at MLK and Atlantic Avenues. With this year’s theme being “Love & Forgiveness,” the honorary celebration will continue to 6pm where more than 25,000 people will gather together for an afternoon of live music and entertainment showcasing visions of peace and brotherhood. There will also be carnival rides and kids activities such as arts and crafts reflecting the spirit of justice. This celebration is a great way to learn more about the local groups and organizations that honor the values of MLK to this day.

Celebrate the late great Martin Luther King Jr. by surrounding yourself with local community members, culture and art. Between 10am to 5pm on January 16, 2017, the California African American Museum will host a special commemoration for the civil rights movement leader. At the event, enjoy a myriad of programs and activities for adults and children. From art making activities and great food, as well as exhibitions, MLK’s speeches and sermons and more, there is plenty to enjoy today. The free event is a major draw for MLK Day celebrations and occurs each year. From 11am to 4pm, guests will be encouraged to create a map adorned with words about how we can change the world, design a button or poster using words, pictures or quotes and much more. Then, from 12pm onwards, enjoy music and food on their patio. Music by DJ Melquan J Williams, as well as award-winning food trucks will be on site for patrons to enjoy. From 1pm to 3pm, there will also be readings of some of Martin Luther King Jr’s speeches as well.

Celebrate Martin Luther King in a big way this year at this annual parade. The parade, which is the largest of its kind in the nation, will do its part to carry on the struggle for equality. All kinds of participants, including inspirational floats and certain celebrities, will herald the life and legacy of this great man as all march down Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Crenshaw Blvd., Western Ave. and Vernon Ave. from 11am to 1pm. The march will also be televised.

Stop by Los Angeles’ Kiddie City in Leimet Park, a fun-filled kingdom full of activities for your little ones, up to MLK Day. Kiddie City will be celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his great impact on civil rights. Get involved in a drum party, a friendship chain, participate in arts and crafts and also enjoy snacks! The event will also feature a raffle and the chance to win prizes. The event is on MLK Day, January 16, 2017 at 3pm and is $15 for general admission, and $10 for members.

On MLK Day, visit Charles W. Eliot Middle School on January 16, 2017 to honor Dr. King in a huge way. The fallen leader will be celebrated today thanks to the Martin Luther King Community Coalition, Pasadena Unified School District, Pasadena Tournament of Roses, and the Aspires West of Pasadena in conjunction with the city of Pasadena and others. There will be many community members, political leaders and student finalists who will be participating in the MLK Community Coalition Essay and Visual & Performing Arts Contest. The free event, which will also feature terrific guest speakers, music, food, arts and crafts, and more, will finish with a terrific ceremony. From 8am to 9:30am, enjoy a continental breakfast. Then, at 9:30am to 10:30am, there will be a teach-in, followed up at 9:45am to 12:30pm by the MLK Holiday Celebration and Program.

In advance of MLK Day, West Los Angeles’ Children’s Book World will honor the great man in a storytelling session for kids ages four and older on January 14, 2017 beginning at 10:30 a.m. Kids who attend will learn about civil rights as they have fun interacting with extremely adept and profusely animated storyteller Michael D. McCarty.
