Memories of the joys of summer camp linger long and become especially fond after your children grow up. However, while your kids are still tykes, their experiences create a bounty of wonder along with a sense of structure during the days of summer break. The following are five day camps in and around Los Angeles that are guaranteed to hold the interest of your own special offspring.
SmartSpace LA Art Camp
Culver West Alexander Park
4162 Wade St.
Culver City, CA 90066
Pay by the week for the chance to introduce your children, ages five to 10, to the joys of creating art. During the summer months, your offspring will be privy to all kinds of courses, from painting and printmaking, to art in nature, to learning about the masters as well as about pop and eco arts. All of this is explored as your little ones produce their own unique pieces made with materials that are provided by the organization sponsoring this super creative and extremely dynamic day camp.
Tumbleweed Day Camp
1024 Hanley Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90049
Horseback riding, swimming and nature hikes are on the agenda at Tumbleweed, located in one of Los Angeles’ most diverse canyons on the West side where mule deer, cocktail, lizards and hawks dwell. Grade-appropriate programs created for elementary school students are, according to this delightful day camp’s site, “designed and developed by state-credentialed teachers to meet and supplement the California content standards in science and social studies.” Translation: this day camp provides the best in outdoor education while campers have a lot of fun, too.
Rock Music Band Camp
American Jewish University
15600 Mulholland Drive
Los Angeles, CA 90077
Want your kid to get his or her groove on by playing with some of the best musicians in town? This is the the place to go for children ages eight to 15 who want to take advantage of an intense immersion program taking place at the top of Mulholland in the Entertainment Capital of the World. Those who partake should expect to be a member of a band, improve his or her musical knowledge and abilities, write songs and give a concert that is then recorded and given to each camper at summer’s end.
LA Surf Camp
641 Westminster Ave. #5
Venice, CA 90291
If this summer is the time for your kids to learn to surf, consider the spot where campers get into this legendary water sport in Southern California. At the time, these sun-soaked campers are encouraged to take on other sand and surf activities. Among the opportunities at LA Surf Camp are volleyball, sand sculpturing, body boarding and frisbee playing. However, the main aim and goal at LA Surf Camp is to own the waves, with safety being a top priority. Pop-up sand shacks for extra shade, wetsuits, foam surfboards, sunblock and snacks are all provided at this activity-oriented day camp alternative. Designed for kids ages seven to 12 and teens 17 and under, LA Surf Camp offers a variety of locations and a whole ton of fun.
Common Thread Studio Funway Camp
1011A Mission St.
South Pasadena, CA 91030
Hoards of hipsters in 2014 are starting to sew so why not start at an early age to learn the tricks of this trade and/or pastime? All ages are invited to learn how to navigate a sewing machine and how to finish a garment or item the right way. Beyond that, the kids in class will be able to come up with their own haute couture offering in a sartorial stab at becoming a designer within the confines of this popular day camp. Advanced students will be encouraged to create something equal to his or her skill level as these so-called stitchers are taken through the entire process of a garment from conception to construction while beginners get to create monster pillows and other fun stuff. Screen printing is also on offer as are private lessons.
