Although "dance the night away" was the mantra of Van Halen during the late 1970s, these days are back again, especially in Los Angeles, also known as the entertainment capital of the world. From small venues to large halls, pop culture is hidden in the music of the dance clubs that lure all ages to their doors in droves. The following are five of the best.

Originally built to hold the Los Angeles Stock Exchange right around the time of the Great Depression, this Sam Lunden-designed Art Deco building now gets into action in a different way. Exchange LA is a stylish venue with a fancy dance floor in a top-flight club that bowed in 2008. Four floors and 28,000 square feet of space is taken over by the pop culture crowd who drops by for a premiere experience while shaking a little booty and other body parts with abandon as a way to express themselves while getting out any frustrations from earlier in the day. Hooray!

Monday "School Nights" - a free show featuring a great band - is a popular time to take in Bardot, located in the upstairs quarters of Avalon. However, every night is worth the effort, especially if you get there before 10pm because after that, the lists tend to come out, meaning you might not get in. A regular pit stop for some and an occasional pit stop for others, Bardot is one of those red velvet experiences, and we're not talking cake. This is a dandy place if you're looking for an intimate venue in which to get your groove on for a little while or for a long blast of dancing pleasure.

Every Saturday, the Mmhmm Lounge in the Standard Hotel turns into Giorgio's, a hot spot for followers of the retro dance movement known as The Hustle. Taking in this hot dance spot allows each guest to get his or her disco on. And don't hold back. White polyester suits and big, big hair are all the rage at Giorgio's, a place that is definitely hopping on the notorious Sunset Strip.

On the east side in Echo Park, a hipster's paradise, The Echo turns up the heat courtesy some of the best indie bands in town. This venue is small and the patio is a chill hangout for taking in the fresh air in between sets or when you just need a gyration break. Drinks are abundant but may take some time to actually be sipped since the service can be slow on a busy night which seems to be all of the time in this popular venue.

Hang out at Boardners and the B52 Club any night of the week and you'll have a blast on the dance floor in a number of ways all dependent on which day you happen to land there. Mondays are reserved for 80s music while hip hop is the name of the game on Fridays on the big dance floor. In between are a bunch of other opportunities to get your groove on in this unpretentious retreat that also hosts a couple of bars and a big screen TV for those who need to rest and revive. Another bonus here: the New Orleans-style patio and Lovin' Lounge are both perfect for schmoozing and canoodling.
