A grilled cheese sandwich is something that a lot of people ate regularly when growing up. It is a simple sandwich, but that doesn’t mean it has to be bland and boring. From a sandwich served with two kinds of cheese, bacon and onions to a simple sandwich grilled to perfection, try these places for the best grilled cheese sandwiches in Orange County.

Some places give you a couple slices or cheese on your grilled cheese sandwich. But when you order a grilled cheese at Nate’s Korner, it is thick with slices of Swiss, provolone and cheddar cheeses on your choice of bread (try the sourdough). The result is amazing, particularly considering you’ve probably been eating grilled cheeses since you had teeth to chew them. Try this sandwich with grilled onions and green peppers for an extra dollar.

When you first hear about The Grilled Cheese Spot, it’s hard to believe that a place specializing in grilled cheese exists. It seems like a pretty small niche that wouldn’t allow for a lot of variety. However, with all of the cheeses, breads, meats and toppings available (you can add up to two vegetables and proteins), you’re bound to end up with a delicious grilled cheese like you’ve never had before.

The Rooster Cafe is a cozy little place not far from The Lab and The Camp. It would be pretty easy to drive past this place and not realize it. The grilled cheese here is pretty straightforward. It comes with cheddar and Swiss cheeses on sourdough bread. However, this sandwich shows how wonderful simplicity can be. The sandwich is grilled to a perfect golden brown, making the bread crisp and the cheese wonderfully gooey. For a little extra, you can make this sandwich even better by adding bacon.

Slater’s 50/50 is known for burgers that are half beef and half bacon. However, if you go here and you’re not in the mood for a big burger, the grilled cheese is an excellent choice. It is pretty thick for a grilled cheese because the two slices of bread are well stuffed with cheese. Slater’s put its own twist on the classic sandwich by adding one piece of cheese to the outside of each slice of bread. The result is a sandwich that’s crisp on the outside and amazingly gooey on the inside. The grilled cheese here is served with the rich and delicious house tomato soup. Bacon can be added for an extra dollar.

You probably don’t think of grilled cheese as a gourmet meal, but at The Deck on Laguna, it is just that. This sandwich is made with cheddar, fontina, bacon and caramelized onions on a good crusty French bread. It definitely beats the American slices and white bread that many grew up with. The grilled cheese here is enhanced even further by the tomato soup served with it.
