What’s the difference between a gastropub and a regular restaurant? As one of the fastest growing trends today, the gastropub combines imaginative and upscale food with as casual dining experience and great drinks. LA’s has plenty of them too, so we’ve decided to round up the best of the best.
The Black Sheep
126 E 6th St
Los Angeles, CA 90013
This gastropub is not like any of the others you’ve set foot into before. With an Asian twist, Downtown LA’s Black Sheep serves craft brews on tap, hearty burgers, bar eats, and Asian flavored food of course. Favorite foods here include their “Black Sheep” burger, banh mi sliders, and truffle cheese tots which you’re likely not to find in many other spots around town.
1018 Montana Ave
Santa Monica, CA 90403
Everyone know’s Father’s Office was at the forefront of creating the gourmet burger in Los Angeles. Serving their famed ‘Office Burger,’ the Santa Monica and Culver City eatery also works hard to pair their delicious pub food with a range of terrific ales, and beers on tap. No substitutions are allowed on the food, so don’t even think about it. But, what’s great about this eatery, is the food is perfect just the way it comes. Serving food that feels rooted in English pub food, the beer is a perfect compliment to any of the food you order, whether it be the burger, fries, or both.
1800 Sawtelle Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90025
Over the past several years, Plan Check has taken over the LA food scene. Opening locations throughout the city, this gastropub is among locals’ favorites for its take on the classic burger and its serving of modern American comfort food in the form of small plates in a pub type atmosphere. Along with one-of-a-kind cocktails, craft beers, premium whiskeys and other drinks, Plan Check is known for other pub-type food like beer nuts, their delicious fries (sweet potato too!) and much more.

With friendly staff, an inviting environment and a great location, what makes this one of the best gastropubs in Los Angeles is their always on point pub food including fish n’ chips, mussels, burgers, and other classic pub fare that can be paired beautifully with their on tap beers, or other full bar choice drinks.

Located in a retrofitted, 100-year old Vaudeville theater, this Echo Park spot might seem like an upscale eatery that doesn’t fit the gastropub feel, but you’d be wrong. With over 70 beers on tap, including other drinks like wine and an array of cocktails, Mohawk Bend prides itself on offering pub type food like their “Whitson Burger” and plenty of other pub type food in a laid-back atmosphere.
