There's no denying that frozen cocktails are the best way to cool down on a hot summer day. The spirit of your choice and a dash of something fruity blended with ice is ultimately refreshing. But finding a bar or non-chain commercial restaurant in LA that makes frozen cocktails is quite a challenge. Frozen cocktails are time consuming and messy and the ice/alcohol/mix ratio needs precision or else you wind up with a glass filled with colored ice. Fortunately, there are still a few places that are willing to make the effort to keep their customers cool and refreshed. Check out these five places for frozen cocktails in Los Angeles.

Tiki bars are known for their powerful tropical rum libations and the crippling hangovers that follow the morning after. And at Tiki No in North Hollywood, the Scorpion Bowl in no different. A serious combination of rum, brandy and gin, the Scorpion Bowl is not normally served as a frozen cocktail, but if you ask nicely and it's not too busy, the bartenders will accommodate. Each Scorpion Bowl comes with its own flaming volcano in the center.

While frozen margaritas can be found at many Mexican restaurants, not many of them will take the added step to complete that "I'm on vacation" illusion. At Pink Taco, you can relax with a delicious strawberry margarita served in a hollowed-out pineapple. It's this significant touch that, if you close your eyes, can whisk you away to the white sands and azul water of a beach in Mexico.

When looking for a rich and creamy pina colada, a Chinese restaurant would not be the first place to come to mind to look. However, Twin Dragon Chinese Restaurant in the Pico-Robertson area is well known for them. Not overly potent or sweet, these stellar pina coladas are served in cute coconut mugs that you might be able to take home if you ask nicely. The pina coladas are served on the rocks and frozen so please specify which way you want it when ordering.

Rosa Mexicano
800 W. Olympic Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90015

The words frozen and margarita were meant to be together in a sentence ever since the blender was invented. Rosa Mexicano, located in the LA Live section of downtown, offers two of them. Satisfy your frozen cocktail craving with Rosa's signature cocktail (this spot has been making them since 1984) - the pomegranate margarita, or mix it up with the tropical margarita with your choice of lime, strawberry or mango.

The Far Bar
347 E. 1st St.
Los Angeles, CA 90012
(213) 617-9990

A slightly different take on the frozen cocktail is the Far Bar's frozen melon. This concoction of vodka, Midori, Crème de Casis, peach schnapps, pineapple juice and sour mix is served ice cold but it's not actually frozen. The hard-handed shaking to mix the beverage causes it to be very frothy, leading to the illusion that it came out of a blender. This cocktail is perfect for people who like the idea of frozen cocktails but can do without the brain freeze.
