Before Jared Leto became a big Oscar-winning actor, he was (and still is) involved in playing music with his brother Shannon and Tomo Milicevic in a band that is 30 Seconds to Mars. The formation of the current band, known for its merging of space rock and progressive metal, happened in 1998 and the self-titled debut album, which came out in 2002, was a smash hit. Indeed, this American rock group from Los Angeles has made waves ever since, with sold-out tours and festival gigs where this trio of lads almost always headline. Experimentally sound, 30 Seconds to Mars is akin to what Pink Floyd and U2 brought to the big arenas in the 1980s. Meanwhile, the newer group's concept albums are always solid as witnessed in the "Up in the Air" music video that won Best Rock Video at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards.

Indietronica is the sound often attached to Los Angeles-based Foster the People. However, the members - which include frontman Mark Foster who plays keyboards, piano, synthesizers, guitar, programming and percussion; Cubbie Fink who plays bass and lends backing vocals; and Mark Pontius who plays drums and percussion - actually grab a number of genres, from alternative rock to neo-psychedelia and beyond. This LA group has been around and vibrant since 2009, managing to hit the charts more than once while appearing in such music festivals as Coachella and South by Southwest.

Twin brothers Zach and Ben Yudin dish out definitive indie pop along with a good amount of surf pop and lo-fi with Christian Koons and Casey Wojtalewicz in the band known as Cayucas. Known for its upbeat tunes, this Millennium group is a combination of The Beach Boys meets The Monkeys, but without the sap and not as squeaky clean. Cayucas' debut album "Bigfoot" hit the charts in 2013 to a lot of success and the group is still going strong in the city of angels. Another fun fact, this band is named after San Luis Obispo, an untainted seaside town located north of Los Angeles that has surfing on the mind always.

Kitten has been drawing rave reviews from such stellar sources as Nylon and Rolling Stone since the band was formed in 2009. For a while, Kitten was just a one-woman band, in the form of disarming Chloe Chaidez, who was dubbed by Spin as causing "a raw power and believability as a performer." Meanwhile, Kitten's official site calls the group's sound "a blend of the ferocious power of late '70s post punk with the sonic textures and rhythms of British new wave."

Big Black Delta

The solo project of Mellowdrone founder Jonathan Bates, this cosmic Los Angeles band dares not slip into pop music, even though hit songs like "Money Rain Down" could easily be perceived that way. Known for its synthpop contribution to music, Big Black Delta is literally big when it comes to creating a mood that is thoroughly infectious. In fact, Bates considers simple snare beats more important than those made by guitar. Take that cue as a chance to immerse yourself in a unique blast of sound while listening to this quality Southland-born unit, live or on your speakers at home.
