Chocolate connoisseurs have probably already sniffed out the best chocolate boutiques in Los Angeles. You will learn that chocolate doesn’t have to be made in Europe to enjoy premium chocolate goodness. Many of these shops make wonderful chocolates right on the premises or in factories nearby.

Located in the heart of Echo Park, Valerie Confections is a local company with a factory just outside downtown Los Angeles. What started in 2004 with only six flavors of chocolate-dipped toffee, Valerie Confections, 10 years later, is one of the more sought-after chocolate boutiques in L.A. The original toffee flavors include almond, almond fleur de sel, orange, ginger, mint and classic toffee. The other must-try candy is Valerie’s Durango bark, which is darkened milk chocolate that is topped with roasted organic California almonds, cocoa nibs and a sprinkling of Durango smoked salt. Partners and founders Valerie and Stan recently opened the Echo Park location, which also serves as a tea house and bakery.

Chef/owner Hasty Torres is everything behind Madame Chocolat. Her chocolate factory is located in downtown L.A. and she offers all of her chocolate goodness through the company’s website. Torres, a native of Los Angeles, puts her passion and love into chocolate. Madame’s specialty bonbons present beautifully and appeal to those aphrodisiac senses. For dark chocolate lovers, take a bite of Le Papa (smooth Courvoisier and French cognac in dark chocolate ganache) and Amour (liquid caramel with a splash of rum centered in rich dark chocolate). Those who prefer milk chocolate can enjoy Milk C’est La Vie (grand Marnier infused in milk chocolate ganache) and Madame (chocolate champagne kiss). Chef Hasty’s specialty cookies are also quite addictive.

For a decadent chocolate experience, take a walk into Lady Chocolatt for more than chocolate. The small family-owned chocolatier in Bruge, Belgium exports more than 300 different hand-crafted chocolates to the atelier in Los Angeles. Each truffle is different from the next, from dark chocolate cream to Champagne cream to hazelnut mousse. Naturally grown fruit (cherry, candied lemon peel, orange and nuts) harvested at its peak is dipped carefully in dark, milk or white chocolate for a beautiful combination of taste and flavor. Lady Chocolatt also serves coffee, Brussels waffles, Italian sandwiches, French croissants and ice cream. The mochas and rich hot chocolates are a real treat here.
