Whether you support USC, UCLA or one of the Cal States, visit the bookstore at one of LA's elite universities to pick up notebooks, backpacks and fun kid's apparel. The USC bookstore is truly huge, and there is an entire section devoted to children's apparel and kid-friendly items including toys and notebooks. If your family attends games, here's a chance to pick up spirit gear that the kids can wear to school and stand out from the crowd. Prices are affordable, but it's definitely worth it to shop around for sales-rack items instead of paying full price here. Don't miss the clearence section for school supplies or apparel this year.

If you're  looking for a single spot that has most of the best merchandise, just stop at Santee Alley, a more organized, mainstream path where the best vendors convene. Whether you chose to meander the eight blocks to check out all of the lot, or if you only have an hour or two to spare, brand-name backpacks such as Jansport, Sanrio, Ecko and South Pole at local shops come at less than $20. Shoes and sandals may be found for less than $6, and at this time of year, many clothing stores are stocked with public school uniforms at bargain prices as well.

The outlets feature a wide range of retail chains at discounted prices. If you're looking for a one-stop shopping trip for the whole family, or if you'd like designer items at an affordable price, the outlets are a great way to multitask. You can't miss the distinctly retro themed walls surrounding all of the loot right off of the Atlantic Boulevard exit on the I-5. Take advantage of the Express Shuttle to make this trip as green as it is family friendly.

Camille's is one of the rare finds in L.A. that has not only maintained its superb reputation for ages, but has done so with it's affordable prices as well. No need for an appointment, this place runs on old-fashioned barber shop rules. The friendly atmosphere here leads to a lot of repeat business, but boys and men of all ages continue to marvel at Camille's expert use of straight-edge razors, hot foam dispensers and other classic tools of the trade.
