Golfing can be an expensive habit. If you’re looking to scale back this summer and still enjoy the fresh air and brisk exercise with buddies, LA has several affordable fields of green. Nine-hole parks are a reasonable alternative to the acres upon acres of field that the most exclusive clubs feature. Here are some options for everyday golfers without a country club card.
Monterey Park Golf Course
3600 W. Ramona Blvd.
Monterey Park, CA 91754
If you need to escape the hustle and bustle of the city completely, hop on the 10 East for 20 minutes and visit Monterey Park. This informal, nine-hole public course is in a perfect location for Angelenos who need a day-cation. Seniors ages 62 and over receive daily discounts, and every Monday is “Ladies Day” where women can enjoy a rate of $7. Enjoy the classic Spanish courtyard atmosphere of one of the park’s two restaurants before or after tee-time.
Roosevelt Municipal Golf Course
2650 N. Vermont Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90027
This public lawn has an online reservation system, allowing guests to reserve their spots up to 16 days in advance. The nine-hole green in the midst of Griffith Park allows golfers to enjoy a myriad of other outdoor activities before and after play. Right among the Hollywood hills, this course provides challenging inclines. Visit the carousel at the children’s park with the whole family, explore the caves or even go hiking and horseback riding to view Mt. Hollywood up close.
Penmar Municipal Golf Course
1233 Rose Ave.
Venice, CA 90291
A brisk walk in Venice Beach’s salty ocean air is always refreshing. Penmar’s regulation course is brief and offers a cool respite from the summer heat. Reservations to this public park can be made online up to 16 days in advance. Golf lessons and rental clubs are also available for an additional fee.
Whittier Narrows Golf Course
8640 Rush St.

Whittier Narrows is one of LA County’s hidden treasures. From arid desert, rivers and streams to marshes and wetlands, nearly every type of ecosystem appears naturally at the end of the Rio Hondo. Three major courses, River, Pine and Mountain, are offered year-round on this 18-hole course. Reservations can easily be made online for months in advance.
