Balboa Island is a great location to enjoy the views of the harbor with its extensive pedestrian paved paths around the Island. Since the Island may get congested with its parking situation, it is recommended to park at the Balboa Pier lot and take the ferry to the Island and enjoy the Island Loop by foot. Some wonderful facts to keep in mind when walking the loop include the fact that Balboa Island is a man-made Island that was actually dredged and filled before World War I. Many famous celebrities owned yachts in the Newport Harbor, including Humphrey Bogart, Dick Powell, Shirley Temple, James Cagney, Mae West and John Wayne.

The sanctuary is open every day until dusk and it exists because of the vision of the man Peer Swan. His vision was to have a location where wildlife and people could co-exist.
