College Football Week 7: #15 Texas Vs. #13 Oklahoma

West Virginia v Texas Kansas State v Oklahoma

Texas

Oklahoma

After losing to West Virginia last week, Mack Brown and Texas can’t afford to drop another Big 12 game so early. He’s been in Austin since 1998; he knows what this rivalry is all about. Coaching Oklahoma is in the same spot as Texas, 1-1 in the conference. Bob Stoops is 8-5 against Texas and his team got back on track last week against Texas Tech.
Texas, as expected, put up some big offensive numbers last week (45 points, 404 yards). David Ash continues to excel in the Longhorns’ offense; he didn’t turn it over against the Mountaineers. Offense Landry Jones looked sharp last Saturday, completing 25 of 40 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He will get enough chances to make a run at the Heisman ceremony, but he must have a big game Saturday.
No matter how dangerous the aerial attack, a good pass rush can negate it. If Texas’ talented defensive front can get after Jones like it got after Geno Smith, it can cause havoc. Defense Texas Tech only gained 360 yards last week; for the season, the Sooners are 17th in total defense. They intercepted three passes, returning one for a score. Expecting a repeat of last year’s performance against Texas (a 55-17 victory) is unlikely, but it should give this unit confidence.
Penn State transfer Anthony Ferrera saw his first action as a Longhorn on Saturday (he had been injured). He made his first kick, a 38-yarder, but most people will remember the 41-yarder he missed with 5:25 left that would have tied the game. Special Teams Michael Hunnicutt has hit 5 of 6 field goals. Tress Way’s punts have led to minimal returns.

The winner is

West Virginia v Texas
Texas
3 out of 4

It is the first Red River Rivalry matchup since 1999 in which neither team is ranked in the top 10. The loser falls dangerously behind in the Big 12 race. It should be close, but Texas is the slightly better team.
