College Football Week 5: Virginia Tech At Cincinnati

Cincinnati

Frank Beamer had his team refocused after a disappointing loss to Pittsburgh, as the Hokies beat Bowling Green 37-0 last week. He always seems to get his teams playing better as the season progresses. Coaching After replacing Brian Kelly (now at Notre Dame) at Central Michigan, Butch Jones did the same thing at Cincinnati. He went 10-2 last year, his second season, and the Bearcats are 2-0 in 2012.
The Hokies are still searching for offensive consistency—they’ve looked very good in half of their games so far. It all starts with quarterback Logan Thomas, who has to improve on his completion percentage (51 percent). Offense Munchie Legaux may have the best name in college football. He’s played well, too, passing and running with effectiveness.
The defense was dominant last week, but coming into the season many expected that kind of performance against most teams on the Hokies’ schedule. There is still plenty of time for this group to find its footing and live up to its potential. Defense The Bearcats have given up just 17 points this season, but one of those games was against Delaware State. This was an average defense last year, and after losing some key contributors, it will be under the microscope in 2012.
Beamer Ball hasn’t been on full display this season. The only special teams area where VT has excelled is punt returns. Special Teams Kicker Tony Miliano and punter Pat O’Donnell, both above average last season, have looked very good so far.

We'll just call it a tie

We don’t know much about Cincinnati yet, but these two teams do have a common opponent: Pitt, which Cincy handled easily. This game could go either way, but the more experienced Hokies have the slight edge.
