#14 Texas

Ole Miss

Mack Brown revamped his staff after the 2010 season. After an up-and-down 2011, most figure the Longhorns to be better adjusted. Coaching Hugh Freeze certainly climbed the coaching ladder quickly. He spent two years as head coach at an NAIA school and the last two seasons at Arkansas State, only one as head coach, before getting hired by Ole Miss.
At least through two games, Brown and his staff have settled on sophomore David Ash as their starting quarterback. He’s a powerful runner and an improving passer. Ash has been quite accurate as the Longhorns have rolled up 425+ yards in their first two games. Offense The Rebels are averaging a whopping 550 yards per game, though Central Arkansas and UTEP didn’t provide much resistance. Bo Wallace, a JUCO transfer, has been exceptional at quarterback.
Texas has a pair of monster pass-rushers that anchor the best defense in the conference, one that has forced four turnovers so far in 2012 and pitched a shutout last week. Defense Mississippi’s defense looks improved from a year ago. Its two opponents haven’t done too much on the ground, which is good news considering the Rebels’ struggles in that area last season.
For now, the Longhorns are relying on two freshmen kickers. That’s because Penn State transfer Anthony Fera has been injured. His status is uncertain for Saturday. Special Teams Senior kicker Bryson Rose is 0 for 4 on field goal attempts this season, though that seems like an aberration. The Rebels haven’t gotten much out of their returners.

4 out of 4

Texas travels into SEC country, but unlike most out-of-conference opponents, the ’Horns should come out with a win. Ole Miss is likely headed in the right direction, but it’s not ready to contend with a nationally elite program.
