Darleene Powells
Darleene Powells is the Features Editor of CBSLA.com, managing and editing a team of 25 freelance writers covering Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Darleene came to CBS2/KCAL9 in 2005 as an online news producer.
Before arriving at CBS2/KCAL9, Darleene worked at the Glendale News-Press as a reporter, covering beats ranging from police, fire and courts to business and politics. During her time at the daily community newspaper, Darleene covered the Glendale Police sexual harassment case from retrial to verdict, and later, settlement. Darleene won recognition twice from a panel of Los Angeles Times editors and reporters.
Darleene earned bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and Asian American studies from Cal State Fullerton, where she distinguished herself at the student newspaper, The Daily Titan. Under her editorship, The Daily Titan staff won recognition and numerous awards for its coverage of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. After graduation, Darleene worked at the Arizona Republic as part of the Pulliam Fellowship program.
Darleene has spent most of her life in the Southern California area, growing up in the San Gabriel Valley, working as a web developer in Los Angeles, and attending college in Orange County. Thanks to her time decorating weddings, Darleene has a nearly encyclopedic knowledge of Southern California geography and freeways.
Darleene enjoys blogging, photography and reading historical fiction. She lives on the border of Los Angeles and Ventura counties with her husband and two young sons.
