Bill Dallman is Vice President and News Director of KCBS – KCAL in Los Angeles, California. He manages the staff and oversees the editorial content of both stations, which together produce and air more than 60 hours of live newscasts each week, in addition to providing 24/7 digital and social media content to its users.
Bill displayed a passion for journalism as early as high school where he wrote for the “Sword and Shield” student newspaper. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a degree in Broadcast Journalism, and began his career just four days after final exams. His first, and favorite, job was as a Reporter/Anchor for KAAL-TV in Austin, Minnesota where Bill was a “one-person-band” shooting, writing, editing and anchoring from the Rochester Bureau, which was actually a small studio located in room #888 of the Kahler Hotel. Dallman found his calling behind the scenes moving to KSTP in Minneapolis as a newscast producer, where he earned the distinction of being named the weekday 6pm newscast producer at age 23.
Bill’s career in news management began in Sacramento, California where he was promoted to Executive Producer at KXTV. That experience led to Dallman landing his first News Director job in Grand Rapids, Michigan where WZZM General Manager Janet Mason hired and mentored Bill for a role in which he would serve for the next two decades (and counting). He was then recruited to FOX Television Stations and fulfilled a lifelong dream to live in Denver, Colorado. Bill was responsible for starting the KDVR – FOX 31 News Department completely from scratch. As news employee #1 he hired every staff member and launched FOX 31 News in July of 2000. After an 8-year run in Denver, FOX Television Stations President Dennis Swanson brought Bill back to his hometown of Minneapolis, Minnesota as VP News for FOX 9 – KMSP.
After 8 years there, David Hill and Scott Ackerson of FOX Sports recruited Bill to start a new venture, the launch of national cable sports network FOX Sports 1. As VP News of FS1, Bill again oversaw a startup news department and the launch of the accompanying shows. Dallman then capped his career quest to become News Director of an affiliate in Los Angeles when he was hired by KCBS – KCAL President and General Manager Steve Mauldin. As Vice President and News Director of KCBS – KCAL, Bill reached the goal that he discussed with his Broadcast Journalism professors and fellow students so long ago back in Madison. He tells the staff and visitors that the core mission of a journalist is to “tell truths and right wrongs”.
Bill is an avid hockey player, golfer and fan of all sports. He’s a fitness enthusiast and genuinely enjoys coming to work each and every day.
