CALABASAS (CBS) — Was Justin Bieber involved in a case of battery Sunday at a Calabasas mall?

According to police, never say never.

Officials say earlier today, Bieber was at a mall in Calabasas — where he’s just purchased a $6.5 million home — when he got into a physical altercation with a paparazzo.

The photographer reportedly called 911, but by the time police arrived, the popular singer was already gone. Bieber was reportedly with girlfriend Selena Gomez.

The alleged incident occurred Sunday afternoon at the open-air mall known as The Commons.

The photog — only identified as a 30-year-old — alleged that Bieber physically “battered” him after he took pictures of Bieber and Gomez.

The paparazzo reportedly complained of pain and was sent to the hospital to be checked out. He was treated and released. Before going to the hospital, the photographer asked that a report of misdemeanor battery be filed.

Bieber has not been arrested. No charges have been filed, according to police.

A lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Malibu-Lost Hills Station says detectives are investigating the alleged incident.

Attorneys scheduled jury selection and pretrial motions in an appearance today before Riverside County Superior Court Judge Richard A. Erwood at Indio’s Larson Justice Center.

London, who had roles in the television dramas “Party of Five” and “7th Heaven,” is free on his own recognizance.

In January, Riverside County Superior Court Judge B.J. Bjork issued a protective order requiring London to have no contact with the woman, who was identified in court papers only as “Jane Doe.” London has a child with Melissa Cunningham, who he married in 2006 and from whom he is separated.

The alleged victim called police the morning of Nov. 18 to claim that London, 39, hurt her when they were outside London’s car — while their son was in the vehicle, Palm Springs police Detective Michael Studer wrote in a declaration in support of arrest. The woman told police the scuffle happened outside a home in the Mountain Gate complex at 400 Gateway Drive.

Studer wrote that London, who had stayed overnight at the home, put the couple’s son, still wearing pajamas, into his car. London told his estranged wife he was taking their son to breakfast, according to Studer.

“(She) said (their son) was yelling, `I don’t want to go,’ ” Studer wrote.

When the woman grabbed London’s backpack from his car in attempt to stop them from leaving, “London grabbed her by her hair, pulling her to the ground,” Studer wrote. “… London hit her several times on the side of the head in an attempt to take the backpack away. (She) said eventually she let go of the backpack and got up off the ground to get (the boy) out of the car.”

London left immediately after the altercation, Studer wrote.

He wrote that the 5-year-old boy told a police officer that his father pulled his mother’s hair, and “My dad was a bad boy.”

In June 2010, London made headlines when he said he was kidnapped and robbed in Palm Springs and forced to buy drugs and alcohol at gunpoint before escaping from his abductors.

In March, one of the men involved pleaded guilty to a felony charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of unlawful taking of a vehicle. He was sentenced to 16 months in prison, but with time already served and other credits, he was released from a Banning jail the day he entered the plea, according to court records.

Riverside County District Attorney’s Office spokesman John Hall said London could get up to a year in county jail if convicted of the battery charge.

Giffords stepped down from her congressional seat to concentrate on her physical rehabilitation. She and eighteen other people were shot during a public meeting held January 8, 2011  in a supermarket parking lot in Casas Adobes, Arizona. Six of the wounded died, including Arizona District Court Chief Judge John Roll; one of Rep. Giffords’ staffers; and Christina-Taylor Green, 9.

This evening, an audience applauded Giffords as she accepted a medal of valor award, for her resilience.

Hand in hand with her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, Giffords stood in front of a capacity crowd. As the honor was bestowed around her neck, she was told “It is a special honor.”

Kelly was also honored at the national tribute dinner for standing by his wife. “She’s a person that never gives up,” he told reporter Suzie Suh. “She continues to fight just like a lot of the folks here tonight fighting for what they believe in.” And she told the crowd she is a fighter. As her husband held her arm aloft, she said, “Fight, fight, fight.”

And Kelly told Suh his wife continues to make amazing progress every day. “She reminds me all the time to deny the acceptance of failure.”

Other award winners include Elisabeth Mann, a holocaust survivor who was thanked for her leadership.

Film and TV producer Jerry Brukheimer (“CSI”) was given a humanitarian award. “”My mother lost some family in holocaust so this is a very important event for us. This is a great honor for my wife, myself and my family.”

Bruckheimer friend, hockey great Wayne Gretzky said of Bruckheimer, “Jerry is the only guy I know in the world that has a hockey rink in the middle of Louisville. So I go to the Kentucky Derby and play ice hockey on Jerry’s farm. He’s such a wonderful person. He’s done so much for charity.

The Tuskegee Airman also were honored and remembered for their courage.

The popular, two-time Emmy-winning actor who plays nerdy, straight-laced Sheldon Cooper acknowledged in a New York Times profile that he is gay and in a long-term relationship.

Parsons, who has starred in “Big Bang Theory” since it debuted in 2007,  is currently starring on Broadway in “The Normal Heart,” an acclaimed play about the AIDS epidemic in 1980′s New York City.

Parsons, 39, is signed to star in the film version of “The Normal Heart,” working opposite “White Collar” and “Magic Mike” actor Matt Bomer who, himself, came out several weeks ago.

Carroll’s son, George Brown, said the actress died Tuesday in New York after a long illness.

Carroll worked steadily since that breakthrough role with Cruise in 1983. Her film credits include “Family Business,” with Sean Connery and Matthew Broderick, and “Memories of Me” with Billy Crystal. On television, in addition to the recurring role on “Melrose Place,” she appeared in such shows as “Murphy Brown” (as Jim Dial’s wife) and “Married With Children” (as Gary.)

Carroll served as artistic director of the jazz series at the Simi Valley Cultural Center in Southern California for many years and performed on tour with the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz Band.

A memorial service will be held Saturday in New York City.

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Will Smith, promoting “Men In Black III” in Moscow, smacked a frisky male reporter who he believed tried to kiss him on the lips.

The Ukranian reporter allegedly asked Smith if he could hug him, and Smith said yes. The reporter than plants a few kisses on Smith’s left and right cheeks.

Smith believed the reporter was going for his lips.

Smith breaks from the hug, pushes the reporter off and then smacked him in the face with his hand.

Video of the incident was first posted on celebrity website TMZ.com.

“Come on, man. What the hell’s your problem, buddy,” Smith says before giving the reporter a backhand slap to the face.

After walking down the red carpet, Smith says, “He tried to kiss me on my mouth. Joker’s lucky I didn’t sucker punch him. Oh sorry. I said that on camera.”

TMZ.com said the reporter is known for kissing celebrities. “It’s his schtick,” they reported.

The 36-year-old will work as a singer, dancer and host in the Las Vegas production for three weeks in June.

In a statement to The Associated Press on Thursday, Lawrence said screening Channing Tatum’s upcoming film about being a stripper — “Magic Mike” — encouraged him to join the male revue.

Says Lawrence: “I found out that guys like Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem have also done stuff like this and being the fearless guy that I am, I said yes.”

The married father of two stars as a male nanny in the ABC Family series “Melissa & Joey.” He’s best known for his role on the 1990s TV show “Blossom.”

LAKE ARROWHEAD (CBS) — In 1986, Thom Bierdz — the actor who plays Phillip Chancellor on “The Young and the Restless — was on top of the world.

He was on the cover of every soap magazine, incredibly popular, beloved by the fans.

Three years later, at the peak of his career, unspeakable real-life tragedy occurred. His brother, Troy, murdered their mother, Phyllis, in his hometown of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Bierdz recently sat down with CBS2 anchor Pat Harvey — at his “tree house,” a very secluded mountain getaway in Lake Arrowhead, hours away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. They talked for hours about his long journey — a journey that also includes forgiving his brother.

“I’ve dealt with some horrible stuff,” says Bierdz.

Younger brother Troy Bierdz murdered their mother in her kitchen, hitting her with a baseball bat. Thom’s brother was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic. It’s all detailed in his harrowing book, “Forgiving Troy.”

His brother wasn’t properly diagnosed for years. He’s currently in prison for the murder. “I was shocked that it happened. I was shocked.” Thom and his siblings were caught off guard. They knew he had problems but nothing could have prepared them for the murder. “I learned later how much he had threatened her. And how much help she tried to get him.”

Getting to a point of forgiveness, obviously, wasn’t easy. “I was angry at my brother for killing. And I was mad at my mother for dying. I knew, there had to be a better picture.”

And that bigger picture, Harvey discovers is in his canvas. For eight years, Bierdz has become a successful artist. While he still acts (Phillip is currently in Australia tending to a busted knee), it’s painting that has become his main occupation and his saving grace. Nature, animals, portraits, straight males portrayed as fictionalized gay couples, his beloved dog — he captures them all in vivid, vibrant colors.

“Painting makes me feel good. I do project after project. It connects me to the now. Now, I’m not too horrified of the past or anxious about the future. That’s what puts me in a good place.”

It took more than 20 years to write “Forgiving Troy.” In the book, he shares feelings of guilt, shame, loneliness. The parts about learning to forgive are especially poignant and moving. “I wanted to show had bad things could go and how good things can go from that.”

For siblings fighting over petty slights, he’s hoping the book can teach people positive messages. And he thinks people can relate, even if they haven’t had unspeakable family tragedy like his. “They get what it’s like to be siblings at odds. They get how it’s like to get mental illness in the family, and how to deal with that. They get what’s it’s like to run away from something.”

Bottom line, he doesn’t want to see people in the kind of pain he’s had to overcome. “My intention is to help people. If I can do that, if I can help people … I love that.”

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A controversial new book makes several stunning claims about the Nicole Brown Simpson/Ron Goldman murders in 1994.

Author William Dear, a retired police officer and long-time private investigator, says O.J. didn’t commit the double homicide. “There is still a murderer out there.”

So,  if O.J. didn’t do it…who did?

Dear says Simpson’s son Jason was the culprit. And he says he can prove it. “Jason was never interviewed by the Los Angeles police department.”

The author of “O.J. Is Innocent And I Can Prove It” says Simpson was merely covering for his son. That Jason had an explosive temper, didn’t like Nicole very much and that he was obsessed with knives should have made him a suspect. Police focused on O.J.,, says Dear, in a classic rush to judgement.

He maintains Jason was certainly old enough (he was 24) strong enough (he was 5’11″ and 235 pounds) to kill two people. His book paints the picture of very disturbed young man. “At the time of the murders, he was on probation for assault with a knife.”

Dear also believes he has uncovered the murder weapon — a knife that was never introduced at trial. But a knife he said turned up in a storage facility owned by Jason.

CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Serene Branson reports about Dear’s stunning claims and his 576-page “true account” of what happened.

He says he’s spent almost a million dollars trying to prove the case against Jason Simpson.

Dear believes O.J, was at the crime scene at some point but that he didn’t participate in the murders. “He was there but after the murder.”

Former O.J. Simpson pal Ron Shipp — a former police officer — believes his friend committed the murders and no one else. When he first heard about Dear’s book, he was stunned. “I thought did you blow a microchip?”

Of the book he says, “There are so many things in there that are wrong. So untrue.”

Branson made numerous attempts to get a comment from Jason Simpson — reportedly now living in Miami and working as a chef — but was unable to reach him.

She also tried to get a statement from the LA DA’s office who said they had “no comment” on the book. O.J. Simpson’s attorney also said he has no comment.

A person familiar with the situation said the Grammy-winning pop star has signed on as a judge for the TV show’s second year. The person was not authorized to publicly discuss details and spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity.

“The X Factor” debuted last fall to ratings that fell short of creator Simon Cowell’s sky-high predictions. The show’s slate was wiped nearly clean in January when judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger exited along with host Steve Jones.

That left Cowell and producer Antonio “L.A.” Reid as judges.

Fox declined to comment on Spears or any other cast additions for “The X Factor.”

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — President Obama is coming to L.A. Thursday for a fundraiser at George Clooney’s house.

The President is scheduled to arrive at LAX around 6 p.m.

A who’s who of Hollywood royalty is expected at Clooney’s residence located near Fryman Canyon in Studio City.

President Obama is expected to take a helicopter to a secret landing zone near Clooney’s house.

Expect road closures up and down Laurel Canyon and on some residential streets through Studio City and environs between 5-8 p.m.

The Clooney fundraiser is expected to add at least $15 million to the Obama re-election war chest.

Commander Andrew Smith is with the LAPD told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO that if drivers should stay away from the area altogether.

“The hot tip I think would be to avoid the streets around Mr. Clooney’s house, where there’s narrow streets, you can count on it being pretty crowded,” said Smith.

Councilman Paul Krekorian, who represents the Studio City district where Clooney resides, tweeted that residents who live south of Ventura Boulevard, can expect “local access to the area will be virtually sealed off from about 8-10 p.m. All local residents will need to show a current photo ID for home access.”

Krekorian said police are advising residents in the Fryman Canyon area to stay home or “make other arrangements for the day.” And he wrote, “there could be instances when you may be rerouted if you live in the region.”

With as many as 150 Hollywood stars and big wigs coming to the area, the Los Angeles Daily News said “Neighbors brace for starmageddon.”

The president is scheduled to stay overnight in Beverly Hills.

A September 2011 Obama visit tied up traffic on the west side for hours. A follow-up fundraising trip in February 2012 was well-coordinated and organizers said there were no major problems reported.

Far better known as the cop in the novelty disco act the Village People, Willis is also remembered for a number of drug-related troubles in the early 2000s that nearly up-ended his post-Village People days. He was also briefly married to Phylicia Rashad of “The Cosby Show.”

Yet there he was this week, being mentioned in the same breath as Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, after he won a court battle to claim at least a third of the copyrights for such songs as “Macho Man,” ”Y.M.C.A.” and “In the Navy” that he co-wrote for his old group.

The former “Macho Man,” who says he has a new album titled “Solo Man” coming out in a few weeks, declined to say what kind of payday he expects Monday’s ruling by U.S. District Judge Barry Moskowitz to bring him.

“But those songs, they gross millions a year, so it could be a significant thing,” he noted with a chuckle.

Willis was a musician-actor who, among other things, had appeared on Broadway in “The Wiz” when Jacques Moreli decided to cash in on the disco craze in 1977 by putting together a group made up of beefy, macho-looking guys dressed as a biker, a construction worker, a cop, a cowboy and an Indian chief.

Willis, who was the group’s lead singer, was soon dancing up a storm with his cohorts to catchy beats while disco balls glittered and music blared around the country and in Europe.

The Village People sold tens of millions of records in the 1970s, and Willis co-wrote all the big hits. But he also signed away his copyrights to the songs for a cut of the profits that today ranges from 12 to 20 percent.

“I was very young and naive,” he said by phone from New York on Thursday. “I didn’t know at that point what I was going to be giving away. So If they put a contract in front of me, I signed it.”

He said he suspects many other young artists did as well, and he hopes his court victory this week will eventually benefit them, too.

When Congress updated federal copyright law in 1978, it allowed songwriters to reclaim such signed-away copyrights after 35 years. That’s something that over time is expected to affect the rights to songs by Dylan, Springsteen, Tom Petty, Billy Joel and others.

After Willis sought to get the copyrights to 33 songs back, the owners, Can’t Stop Productions and Scorpio Music, sued to stop him, arguing that he was simply a “worker for hire” for the Village People and therefore had no stake in the songs. They also argued that because his co-writers didn’t join him in seeking their share of the copyrights Willis shouldn’t be granted his share either.

The companies dropped the “worker for hire” argument before Moskowitz issued his ruling Monday. The ruling determined that Willis didn’t need to join with the others.

Still to be determined is just how much of the copyrights he’ll control, one third or one half. His co-writers are credited as Moreli and Henri Belolo, although Willis says he and Moreli really wrote the songs.

“Belolo didn’t write anything. He was just the publisher,” he said, adding he’s confident that means the court will give him 50 percent.

The music publishers’ attorney, Stewart Levy, disagrees, saying he expects Willis will get no more than a third, which he maintains isn’t much more lucrative than the 20 percent he gets these days for “Y.M.C.A.”

“We’re disappointed of course but we don’t think it’s as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be,” he said of Monday’s ruling.

Willis’ attorney, Brian Caplan said the case is the first addressing the rights of songwriters to terminate agreements they signed decades ago, and as such, lays the legal groundwork for others who seek to reclaim their copyrights.

That could open “a tremendous can of worms” for the music industry, said Mark Volman, coordinator of the Entertainment Industry Studies program and an assistant professor at Belmont University in Tennessee.

“It would be a tremendous win (for songwriters) to get something like that in place,” said Volman, who as a founding member of the 1960s group the Turtles fought his own share of battles over royalty rights signed away.

As for Willis, he’s looking to getting on with his career.

After vocal cord surgery in 2008, and a series of arrests on drug-related charges in the mid-2000s that resulted in a stint in rehab, he says his life has turned around in recent years.

“Life is fine. I went through whatever I went through, but everything is going great now,” he said.

ABC had the most nominations with 55, including nominations for the canceled soaps “All My Children” and “One Life to Live.”  CBS daytime had 32 nods.

The Marshall-Donnelly-Combs Funeral Home in Nashville said Lindsay died early Sunday morning after a brief illness.

Lindsey was the beanie-wearing Goober on “The Andy Griffith Show” from 1964 to 1968 and its successor, “Mayberry RFD,” from 1968 to 1971. He played the same jovial character on “Hee Haw” from 1971 until it went out of production in 1993.

“America has grown up with me,” Lindsey said in an Associated Press interview in 1985. “Goober is every man; everyone finds something to like about ol’ Goober.”

He joined “The Andy Griffith Show” in 1964 when Jim Nabors, portraying Gomer Pyle, left the program. Goober Pyle, who had been mentioned on the show as Gomer’s cousin, replaced him.

“At that time, we were the best acting ensemble on TV,” Lindsey once told an interviewer. “The scripts were terrific. Andy is the best script constructionist I’ve ever been involved with. And you have to lift your acting level up to his; he’s awfully good.”

In a statement released through the funeral home, Griffith said, “George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit. In recent years, we spoke often by telephone. Our last conversation was a few days ago … I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, ‘I love you.’ That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. ‘I love you.’”

Although he was best known as Goober, Lindsey had other roles during a long TV career. Earlier, he often was a “heavy” and once shot Matt Dillon on “Gunsmoke.”

His other TV credits included roles on “MASH,” ”The Wonderful World of Disney,” ”CHIPs,” ”The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour,” ”The Real McCoys,” ”Rifleman,” ”The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” ”Twilight Zone” and “Love American Style.”

Reflecting on his career, he said in 1985: “There’s a residual effect of knowing I’ve made America laugh. I’m not the only one, but I’ve contributed something.”

He had movie roles, too, appearing in “Cannonball Run II” and “Take This Job and Shove It.” His voice was used in animated Walt Disney features including “The Aristocats,” ”The Rescuers” and “Robin Hood.”

Lindsey was born in Jasper, Ala., the son of a butcher. He received a bachelor of science degree from Florence State Teachers College (now the University of North Alabama) in 1952 after majoring in physical education and biology and playing quarterback on the football team.

After spending three years in the Air Force, he worked one year as a high school baseball and basketball coach and history teacher near Huntsville, Ala.

In 1956, he attended the American Theatre Wing in New York City and began his professional career on Broadway, appearing in the musicals “All American” and “Wonderful Town.”

He moved to Hollywood in the early 1960s and then to Nashville in the early 1990s.

“There’s no place in the United States I can go that they don’t know me. They may not know me, but they know the character,” he told The Tennessean in 1980.

Lindsey devoted much of his spare time to raising funds for the Alabama Special Olympics. For 17 years, he sponsored a celebrity golf tournament in Montgomery, Ala., that raised money for the mentally disabled.

The University of North Alabama awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1992, and he was affectionately called “Doctor Goober” by acquaintances after that.

Funeral arrangements were still being made.

Stewart was 91.

He died of natural causes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills.

Stewart retired in 1992 but remained a creative consultant to his company now headed by son Sande Stewart.

He was also responsible for shows like “To Tell the Truth” and “Password.”

Born Isidore Steinberg in Brooklyn, New York in 1920, Stewart’s early career began as a radio producer.

After a stint with Goodson-Todman, the preeminent TV producers of their day in afternoon programming, Stewart set out on his own in 1964 and formed his own production company.

He developed several shows but few of them caught on with the exception of a Bill Cullen-hosted show called “Three on a Match.”

In 1973, he sold “$10,000 Pyramid” to CBS with Dick Clark as host. “Pyramid” was an immediate smash, won a boatload of Emmys  and spun off several versions.

Until he was surpassed in 2006 by “Jeopardy’s” Harry Friedman, Stewart had the most daytime Emmys of any game show producer.

He was inducted into the TV Academy’s Hall of Fame in 2010.

Other Stewart shows include “Jackpot!,” “Winning Streak” and “Chain Reaction.”

The District Attorney’s Office cited insufficient evidence against the 25-year-old star of such films as “Mean Girls” and “Freaky Friday.”

“There is no direct evidence to show Lindsay Lohan or anyone else struck victim (Thaer) Kamal,” according to the District Attorney’s charge evaluation worksheet. “… The fact that no collision is seen on the video and a lack of any damage to any vehicle or any independent witnesses make it impossible to prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Kamal is manager of the Hookah Lounge.

Lohan received a glowing review March 29 from Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner as her probation ended in connection with a 2007 DUI case in Beverly Hills.

The actress will remain on probation through May 2014 on a case stemming from the theft of a necklace from a Venice jewelry store, but the judge reduced that to unsupervised, summary probation.

A spokeswoman for the 40-year-old TV personality says Harrison and his wife are ending their 18-year marriage.

Harrison has hosted the ABC dating series and its various spin-offs since it debuted in 2002.

Harrison and his wife, Gwendolyn, said in a statement that despite their “incredibly difficult decision to separate,” their love and mutual respect remain, and they look forward to sharing in the lives of their two children.

In February 2010, on a reunion show taping, booted “Bachelor” contestant Rozlyn Papa (kicked off the show for allegedly striking up an inappropriate relationship with one of the show’s producers) accused Harrison of hitting on that producer’s wife to which a stunned Harrison said, “I won’t even dignify that with a response.”

The eighth season of “The Bachelorette” is set to premiere May 14.

TBS said Thursday that World Peace would sit down with Conan O’Brien on Monday night. The former Ron Artest is suspended for seven games, which will carry through at least late next week. The Lakers don’t have a game Monday.

World Peace had a scheduled appearance for the show on April 22, but MWP’s publicist cancelled the day after the elbow to Harden’s head.

World Peace has five more games to sit to complete his suspension.

Robert Procop filed the lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court Wednesday, saying a Hilton posting on April 17 wrongly accused him of committing criminal and civil fraud in connection with a 1985 diamond necklace transaction. He is asking for more than $500,000 in damages.

A representative for Hilton could not be immediately reached.

The posting stated that Procop had not only been sued for fraud, but that an $89,000 judgment was rendered against him, according to his court filing.

The posting further stated that the buyer thought he was getting a 25.5-carat necklace, but that in reality it only had 17.62 carats, the suit says.

“The statements that (Procop) was guilty of fraud in connection with a jewelry transaction and that the court in the fraud action had entered a judgment against plaintiff are false,” according to the lawsuit.

Procop says he has suffered harm to his reputation. He also wrote that Hilton has refused to issue a retraction or remove the posting.

“As a world-renowned jewelry designer and jeweler, (Procop’s) reputation for honesty is of critical importance to his business,” the suit says.

Her co-star in “The Avengers,” Jeremy Renner, was among those joining Johansson at the ceremony in front of Madame Tussauds wax museum on Hollywood Boulevard.

Johansson’s other early credits include “Manny & Lo,” which brought her an Independent Spirit Award nomination for best female lead; “The Horse Whisperer,” portraying a teenager traumatized by a riding accident; and “Ghost World.”

Following a nearly 2 1/2-day preliminary hearing, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Robert J. Perry found there was sufficient evidence to require the alleged triggerman, Jabaar Vincent Thomas, 27, and Destiny Young, 30, to stand trial.

They are charged in the shotgun shooting deaths of Gabriel Aron Ben-Meir, who was gunned down outside his apartment building on May 8, 2011, and Marcelo Aragon, 35, who was killed in the Pico-Union area on April 30, 2011.

Ben-Meir, who was 30 at the time of his murder, worked on the show “Punk’d.”

The murder charges include the special circumstance allegations of murder during the course of a robbery and multiple murders. Prosecutors will decide later whether to seek the death penalty.

Thomas and Young are also charged along with co-defendant Richard Edward Anderson Jr., 34, in a series of robberies.

Thomas, Young and Anderson were arrested last May and have remained behind bars.

While holding the three to answer on the majority of the charges against them, the judge dismissed one robbery count each against Young and Anderson. He also amended three robbery charges to attempted robbery.

Thomas, Young and Anderson are due back at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse on May 10 for arraignment.

Brown’s attorney entered the plea on the entertainer’s behalf to driving with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or above, and he was immediately sentenced to a 90-day alcohol program, three years probation and a $390 fine plus penalty assessments, said Frank Mateljan of the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.

The 43-year-old singer was arrested about 12:20 p.m. March 26 at Victory Boulevard and Wilbur Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Harris. He was driving west on Victory just east of Yolanda Avenue in moderate traffic when an officer saw him talking on a cell phone.

“Mr. Brown displayed objective symptoms of intoxication and was asked to submit to a series of field sobriety (tests) that he was unable to perform as explained/demonstrated,” according to a CHP report.

He was taken to the Van Nuys jail, but was later released.

Brown has a DUI conviction on his record stemming from an arrest in Georgia in 1996. He pleaded guilty and served eight days in jail.

Brown rose to fame with the group New Edition. He was married for nearly 15 years to Whitney Houston, who died Feb. 11 at the Beverly Hilton hotel. Brown is also  the father of the late singer’s only child, Bobbi Kristina.

An attorney for 32-year-old Stacie Halas said Friday that she will “vigorously contest” the allegations against her.

Lawyer Richard Schwab told the Ventura County Star that Halas engaged in “lawful conduct” in a “very vibrant” business for California.

Oxnard School District trustees voted Wednesday night to fire Halas, who taught seventh and eighth grade science at Richard B. Haydock Intermediate School.

She had been on paid administrative leave since her appearance on the video surfaced last month. Superintendent Jeff Chancer said her return to class would be disruptive.

Halas has 30 days to appeal the decision by requesting a hearing with an administrative law judge.

He died from complications of a fall, according to former cast member Kathryn Leigh Scott, who played Maggie Evans and several other characters on the gothic soap.

“Dark Shadows” was a national craze for much of its run on ABC daytime from 1966-1971.The show was a slow ratings starter — centered around the bored and rich Collins family.

About six months into the run, producer Dan Curtis decided to add supernatural elements to the program — vampires, ghosts, witches, people coming back from the dead, going back in time, people playing dual characters and a parallel universe.

Frid was Barnabas Collins, a brooding, reluctant and sometimes conflicted vampire who found love elusive.When he joined the cast in early 1967, the ratings shot through the roof.

A generation of today’s adults can recall running home from school to watch the program. It spawned two theatrical movies, board games, a lunch box, trading cards and comic book craze. A short-lived prime time version — with actor Ben Cross as Barnabas –  aired in 1991. Another pilot, in 2004, was shot but never aired.

Frid died on Friday the 13th. He makes a cameo in the upcoming Johnny Depp version of “Dark Shadows” due out May 11.

For many years, Frid ran from his celebrity and refused to attend fan events. He came to embrace his legacy in later years selling postcards, greeting cards and autographs on his site, jonathanfrid.com.

Nathaniel Claybrooks and Christopher Johnson filed a federal lawsuit in Nashville Wednesday against the popular TV shows claiming they are engaged in a pattern of racial discrimination that intentionally excludes people of color. The Nashville men said at a casting call in August that they were given scant consideration compared to white men seeking a leading role for “The Bachelor.”

Claybrooks said white applicants were given far more time and consideration during the interview process.

“I only wanted a fair shot at the part,” said the soft-spoken Claybrooks, a 39-year-old college graduate and electric company meter reader who owns several small businesses. “Looking back at how I was treated at the casting call last year, it was clear that that wasn’t possible. I never even had a chance.”

Their attorneys said it is the first racial discrimination lawsuit filed against a reality show. It does not ask for a specific dollar amount of damages, but it does propose to make major changes in how people are seen on TV.

The two men say that after 10 years and a combined total of 23 seasons of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” neither show has featured a single person of color in a central role. The reality show features about 25 prospective brides competing for the heart of a single guy. The gender roles reverse in its sister show, “The Bachelorette.”

Both shows have come under fire in recent years for not having enough diversity.

The lawsuit names Michael Fleiss, the creator of the shows, as well as ABC, Warner Horizon Television, Next Entertainment and NZK Productions. Calls and emails to Fleiss’ publicist and an email to an ABC publicist were not immediately returned.

Warner Horizon Television released a statement late Wednesday evening saying the complaint is baseless and without merit.

“We have had various participants of color throughout the series’ history, and the producers have been consistently — and publicly — vocal about seeking diverse candidates for both programs. As always, we continue to seek out participants of color for both ‘The Bachelor’ and ‘The Bachelorette,’” the statement reads.

The lawsuit claims that white applicants are featured prominently because of a calculation that “minorities in lead roles and interracial dating in unappealing to the shows’ audience.”

“The refusal to hire minority applicants is a conscious attempt to minimize the risk of alienating their majority-white viewership and the advertisers targeting that viewership,” the lawsuit says. “Nevertheless, such discrimination is impermissible under federal law.”

Critics have said the shows do not have diverse leading men and women because a segment of Americans aren’t ready to see interracial courting and romance on primetime television. Creator Fleiss has publicly said that the shows’ producers have tried to be more inclusive, but for whatever reason, minorities aren’t applying.

Johnson, a 26-year-old teacher who was just hired to coach high school football, said at a news conference that when he went to the casting call, he was stopped immediately by a show representative and asked what he was doing at the hotel where the men were applying for the lead role.

He said he was only given the opportunity to hand in some materials, even as white applicants appeared to be given further consideration at the hotel.

Both men said they have been fans of the show and that, unlike online dating, saw it as an opportunity to communicate with women face to face.

The lawsuit claims that the shows and the entertainment companies are violating a provision of the 1866 Civil Rights Act that bars businesses from refusing to contract with others because of their race and a California law that prohibits racial discrimination.

The two men are asking the federal court to order the companies to consider people of color as finalists for the leading role in the TV shows. They are also asking that the suit be certified class-action so others could join the litigation.

A Portland-based sportscaster, Lamar Hurd, who is vying to be the first black bachelor, has reportedly been in talks with the show after he was the subject of a social media campaign.

Johnson said he thinks attitudes will change once the show gets a black man in the lead role.

“I equate it to black quarterbacking in the NFL,” Johnson said. “When you give them an opportunity, they always come through.”

Johnson himself said in the lawsuit that he aspires to be in the NFL and is trying out for teams. He said he was recruited by a number of Tennessee colleges to play wide receiver and chose to play at Tennessee State. Claybrooks played linebacker for Middle Tennessee State then for the Arena Football League and Nashville’s semi-professional team, the Nashville Storm, from 2001 to 2011.

Power, who also won the Long Beach Grand Prix in 2008, posted the second fastest qualifying time.

He was forced to start 12th as Power was among 11 drivers in the 26-car field who had to start 10 spots lower than they otherwise would have because of a penalty stemming from unapproved changes to their Chevrolet engines.

Power passed Simon Pagenaud on the 71st lap and led for the remainder of the 85-lap race around the 1.97-mile, 11-turn street circuit around the Long Beach Convention Center, finishing .8675 of a second ahead of Pagenaud.

Power completed the race in 1 hour, 54 minutes, 1.6082 seconds. His average speed was 88.021 mph.

“We really didn’t think it was possible to win from 12th place because it was a two-stop race, but never say never,” Power said. “We ran hard when we had to. The end there, I had to save so much fuel.”

Dario Franchitti, who started from the pole due to having the fastest qualifying time, finished 15th.

Internet reports say Sands, 66, tried a sample of beef at the deli counter at a Gelson’s in Century City on March 24th.

Sands’ son told The Wrap, that his father had Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease which caused him to have unusually narrow airways.

Bystanders reportedly tried the Heimlich maneuver on Sands for several minutes. Sands was pronounced dead at the scene, then reportedly revived. He was taken to Cedars-Sinai where he was declared dead on April 6.

The news and circumstances of Sands’ passing were reported Friday.

Sands’ other clients included Hollywood plastic surgeons, private eyes, Kevin Federline, actress Kristy Swanson, onetime Bond actor George Lazenby and Michael Reagan, the former president’s son.

Sands, a former actor and model, was known for promoting himself. He started a designer line of cheesecakes — C’est Cheesecake — and posed semi-nude in People to promote the line. Sands also claimed as a member of the CIA that in 2003 he helped capture infamous terrorist Abu Abbas, mastermind of the hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruise ship in 1985.

Warner Bros. spokesman Paul McGuire said Friday the studio is “analyzing what to do with the project.”

The film about the biblical hero was to be a collaboration between producer Mel Gibson and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. After the studio rejected Eszterhas’ script, he accused Gibson of anti-Semitism in a letter published online.

Gibson denied the screenwriter’s claims and called them “utter fabrications.” He also reportedly called the submitted script “substandard.”

In 2006, Gibson was arrested for drunken driving. A leaked arrest report revealed he used anti-Semitic and sexist slurs.

The Eszterhas allegations and Gibson’s history prompted Rabbi Marvin Hier of the Simon Wiesenthal Center to call for “Warner Brothers (or any other studio) to permanently shelve the Maccabee project as long as Mel Gibson is associated with the film.”

The Maccabees’ unlikely victory over those who would repress Jewish religious freedoms is celebrated on Chanukah, the Jewish festival of light.

Eszterhas’ credits include “Basic Instinct,” “Jagged Edge,” “Flashdance” and “Showgirls.”

In an interview with “The Today Show,” Eszterhas said his 15-year-old son secretly recorded Gibson during a “violent harangue” and is considering releasing it to prove his story is true. Said Eszterhaus, “I don’t like to be called a liar.”

Eszterhas said the alleged tape contains Gibson making anti-Semitic remarks as well as threats against the actor’s ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva. The screenwriter also alleged Gibson shared with the 15-year-old a “pornographic scenario that I could only call sexual butchery that he fantasized in terms of Oksana.”

The aforementioned musical (“Cabaret”), the horror film (“Rosemary’s Baby”) and the former bomb (“Cleopatra”) will be shown along with such fare as “Sabrina,” “Love Story,” “Annie Hall,” “Elmer Gantry,”  “Vertigo,” “Moonstruck” and “Casablanca” to name a few.

Movies are shown at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, the Cinerama Dome and other venues. Organizers of the festival say the aim is simple. “Where movie lovers from around the world gather to experience classic movies as they were meant to be seen — on the big screen.”

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — At an age when some kids can’t get into movies, Gerry Orz, 10, is making them.

Orz was 9 when he produced an anti-bullying movie. Besides garnering interest in the San Gabriel Valley school district where he lives — with his two mothers and brother –  the movie has also gotten interest from the state of Illinois.

Orz (he says “everyone calls me G”) said he was bullied a lot when he was younger and he decided to produce the movie to help other kids who are being picked on.

He told CBS2 and KCAL9 reporter Christy Fajardo that he wants to change the world — one act of kindness at a time.

Most of the anti-bullying videos in circulation, he feels, preach to kids and lecture. And he maintains, no kid wants to pay attention to that. So he decided to go a more visual route.

He also produced his film and aimed at elementary school children. G believes videos aimed at older kids are too little, too late.

G says he was bullied for a variety of reasons. On his website, he writes “I have been bullied in school for so many reasons — too tall, gay parents, parent a foreigner, too honest, too polite, too Jewish. I refused to feel like a victim. I had the support of my mothers and a brother, and my voice was heard. Not everyone is so lucky.”

In addition to his film, G is starting a campaign to organize a global day of silence (on 12/12/12) to further shed light on bullying.

Orz is no stranger to show business. He’s appeared in a number of commercials and the Animal Planet series “Killer Outbreaks.”

When not appearing in front of a camera, or writing or creating, Orz maintains he’s a regular kid. He loves McDonald’s, video games and shopping for cool toys at Target.

Also on his agenda: meeting President Obama and helping to see the day his mothers can legally wed in California.

“My heart is broken today over the death of my dear friend, Mike Wallace,” Reagan said in a statement. “My parents introduced me to Mike more than 75 years ago, and we’ve been fast friends ever since.

“Mike was on old school journalist and one of the most astute people I’ve ever met,” she said.

“The news business will be a different place now, and our lives will be forever changed for having known him.”

Wallace and Nancy Davis were friends at the time that Wallace was working as an announcer, commercial pitchman and game show host for various Los Angeles broadcasting companies.

Penhall was the son of former “CHiPs” actor Bruce Penhall, a World Speedway Champion in 1981 and 82, as well as a legend in motorcycle racing circles.

The younger Penhall was killed Wednesday night while working on a closed portion of the 10 Freeway in Baldwin Park. CHP officers said Tatsuhiko Sakamoto, an alleged drunk driver, plowed through barricades and hit Penhall.

Sakamoto, 37, was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter. Sakamoto’s car has Hawaii plates but he’s believed to be a resident of Arcadia.

“Over the past two days, my family and I have been overwhelmed by the tremendous international outpouring of support as a result of the news reporting, Facebook fans, family, friends and the motorsports community at large. We’re so grateful to have such support at this very emotional and difficult time,” Bruce Penhall said.

“One hopes to never have to plan for such a tragic event involving one of your kids. It truly can happen to anyone,” said Laurie Penhall, Connor’s mother.

The younger Penhall was a motorcross champion in his own right, becoming California champion.

A Penhall family spokesperson said the family  isn’t currently planning a public memorial and asked for privacy while they grieve.

Klum and Seal, 49, announced their separation in January.

The couple have three children: Henry, 6; Johan, 5; and Lou, 2. Klum also has a daughter, Leni, from a previous relationship.

Klum is asking for joint legal custody of the children with visitation rights for Seal.

Klum married stylist Ric Pipino in 1997. They divorced in 2002.

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Reality starlet Kim Kardashian has decided to press charges against the woman suspected of flour-bombing her during a charity event, celebrity web site TMZ.com reports.

The incident Thursday night occurred at the London Hotel in the 1000 block of San Vicente Boulevard where Kardashian was holding an event to promote her new fragrance line, True Reflection.

TMZ says that sources close to Kardashian said she doesn’t feel the woman who threw the flour should get away with it.

Kim didn’t press charges initially because it was a charity event, according to TMZ.

Panic followed the assault at the hotel as authorities tried to determine whether the white substance was harmful.

The Libertarian Party nominated the fan favorite from 2004′s “Survivor: All-Stars” at its state convention Saturday in Indianapolis.

Boneham said in a phone interview afterward that he feels he has “a strong chance of pulling not just the Libertarian vote, but the independent vote, the undecided vote, and maybe even some votes from Democrats and Republicans.”

The tie-dye wearing Boneham won $1 million on the “Survivor” series and donated some of the prize to his Rupert’s Kids charity, which provides mentoring and job training to at-risk youths.

Boneham says he’s been a Libertarian for more than 20 years, but didn’t become active in the party until this year.

WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBS) —  A woman threw a white substance — believed to be flour — at E! television personality Kim Kardashian at a West Hollywood hotel Thursday evening, a sheriff’s deputy said.

The woman was detained by security at the hotel in the 1000 block of San Vicente Boulevard, near Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Peter Gomez said.

Kardashian told officials she did not want to press charges.

A non-criminal battery report was taken, according to Gomez.

Kardashian returned to her room where she removed powder from her hair and clothing and returned to the event she was hosting, Gomez said.

Paramedics were summoned to the scene, but Kardashian declined medical attention, Gomez said.

The incident occurred at the London Hotel where Kardashian was reportedly holding an event promoting her new fragrance line, True Reflection.

PETA denies having anything to do with the attack and issued a statement Friday.

“PETA has tried everything from polite letters to public protests, but Kim Kardashian has not been moved by the news that animals are beaten, electrocuted, and even skinned alive for real fur garments. Whoever threw that flour may reach her when our polite appeals did not.”

The disclosure came after the panel spent a little more than a day discussing evidence presented during the two-week trial.

Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White told jurors to resume talks on Friday and to let her know if they need to hear additional arguments or ask more questions.

Earlier Thursday, the jury had asked for the definition of a legal issue involved in the case.

White told attorneys handling the case she would send the panel back to keep deliberating several times if necessary, but “if they’re deadlocked, they’re deadlocked.”

Sheridan is seeking nearly $6 million from ABC, claiming she was fired from the show for complaining that series creator Marc Cherry struck her during an on-set dispute.

Cherry and ABC have denied wrongdoing and said a decision to eliminate the character played by Sheridan was made months before the spat.

Riverside County District Attorney’s Office spokesman John Hall said it was unclear if London would be in court. The actor, who starred in the television dramas “Party of Five” and “7th Heaven,” is free on his own recognizance.

In January, Riverside County Superior Court Judge B.J. Bjork issued a protective order requiring London to have no contact with the woman, who was identified in court papers only as “Jane Doe.”

London has a child with Melissa Cunningham, whom he married in 2006 and from whom he is separated.

The alleged victim called police the morning of Nov. 18 to claim that London, 39, hurt her, Palm Springs police Detective Michael Studer wrote in a declaration in support of arrest. The woman told police the scuffle happened outside a home in the Mountain Gate complex at 400 Gateway Drive.

Studer wrote that London put the couple’s son, still wearing pajamas, into his car. London told his estranged wife he was taking their son to breakfast, Studer wrote.

“(She) said (their son) was yelling, `I don’t want to go,’ ” Studer wrote.

When the woman grabbed London’s backpack from his car in attempt to stop them from leaving, “London grabbed her by her hair, pulling her to the ground,” Studer wrote. “… London hit her several times on the side of the head in an attempt to take the backpack away. (She) said eventually she let go of the backpack and got up off the ground to get (the boy) out of the car.”

London left immediately after the altercation, Studer wrote.

He also wrote that the 5-year-old boy told a police officer that his father pulled his mother’s hair, and “My dad was a bad boy.”

In June 2010, London made headlines when he said he was kidnapped and robbed in Palm Springs and forced to buy drugs and alcohol at gunpoint before escaping from his abductors.

In March, Brandon Adams pleaded guilty to a felony charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of unlawful taking of a vehicle. He was sentenced to 16 months in prison, but with time already served and other credits, he was released from a Banning jail the day he entered the plea, according to court records.

Hall said London could get up to a year in county jail if convicted of the battery charge.

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — To Los Angeles TV audiences, Dr. Lucy Jones is known as the earthquake expert.

She’s the seismologist who appears on TV, usually within minutes of a quake, to calm rattled nerves. She tells the audience how deep the quake was, where it was located, the chance for aftershocks. “People are afraid of earthquakes because they make us feel out of control,” she says.

Jones acknowledges that her role is strange. “It’s a weird thing to turn to a scientist for comfort, right?”

Jones, officially a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, recently gave CBS2 a glimpse into her personal life.

You know her as the quake expert. What you might not know: She’s a mother of two and a musician. She speaks fluent Chinese. Jones plays a mean viola de gamba.

A native of Santa Monica, Jones grew up loving music, science and math.

Her father was an aerospace engineer and he played numbers games with his daughter. “You like what you’re good at and I was good at math. I could wipe out everybody else in class.”

Walking through the corridors of the middle school she attended in Westchester, she remembers a brilliant math teacher who also sparked her love for math and sciences. She also recalls her dream of being a physicist who would live on the moon.

Back down to Earth, the only female in her physics classes decided to study geophysics. She wanted to save people from the devastating affects of quakes “instead of building bombs that kill people.”

Jones earned a B.A. in Chinese language and literature from Brown. And while working on her P.H.D. in Geo-physics, she went to China for the first time. It helped that she was fluent. While there, she also met Egill Hauksson, a fellow seismologist.

The couple got their P.H.D’s five days apart. “And we got married three months later,” says Jones.

They returned to the states in the early 80s. And she’s been reporting on quakes in the Southland ever since.

She vividly recalls the time when she was holding a post-quake press conference and holding her newborn at the same time. “My husband literally handed me the baby in the middle of an interview because he would scream if we put him down.”

Jones reluctantly became a symbol of working mothers. “How you can have it all. And how you can’t.”

Her children now grown, she can devote her entire life to the study of quakes. And calming the public.

She’s “grateful” these days for more quiet time. And juggling work and her music. “My father taught me, if you get a job you enjoy, you will enjoy your life.”
