LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Whitney Houston needed a make-up artist Thursday and Reginald Dowdley, through a connection, got a surprise call and then the gig.

He spoke exclusively Saturday night with Louisa Hodge — reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9 News — hours after he learned of the icon’s death. She called him earlier Saturday to do her make-up for Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy party.

Dowdley had never met Houston before Thursday and her death hit him hard.

“I was elated to do her make-up,” he told Hodge, “I finally got to work with her…someone I idolized. And I thought, ‘wow, now I’m working with her.”

Although some media reports said Houston was “erratic” on Thursday, Dowdley said he found her nothing but great, professional, friendly and fun to work with.

“She asked me some personal questions, she told me how great life was, how happy she was,” he said.

He showed Hodge a series of photos on his cell phone showing the singer ebullient and beaming. She enjoyed his work so much, she called him Saturday and wanted to book his services. “I was … honored,” he said, choking back tears.

“I still can’t believe she is gone,” he says, “just two days later. I’m shocked. I cried earlier. But I don’t believe it.”

During their make-up session, Dowdley says Houston chatted while enjoying gospel music and described her as “joyful…vibrant. She was just relaxing. And so excited. She talked a lot about the party tonight … and how she was so looking forward to it.”

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.

Reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, Edward Lawrence said she was found on the 4th floor of the Beverly Hilton. He said paramedics tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.

Houston was set to attend Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy party.

Notable music producer Scott Bomar told CBS, “Whitney performing was always the apex of this party. It is surreal that she passed here earlier today. You can feel in the room that we have lost one of our own and an icon. It was all made more real when I got into an elevator with Dionne Warwick and many of her family…you realize how much of a loss this is not only to her fans but her family as well.”

Chaka Khan and Jennifer Hudson will reportedly sing a tribute to Houston at Sunday’s Grammys. Khan, of course, first sang one of Houston’s biggest smashes, “I’m Every Woman.”

At her peak, Houston the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.”

She had the he perfect voice, and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.

She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.

But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.

“The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,” Houston told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.

It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

She seemed to be born into greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 1960s pop diva Dionne Warwick and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin.

Houston first started singing in the church as a child. In her teens, she sang backup for Chaka Khan, Jermaine Jackson and others, in addition to modeling. It was around that time when music mogul Clive Davis first heard Houston perform.

“The time that I first saw her singing in her mother’s act in a club … it was such a stunning impact,” Davis told “Good Morning America.”

“To hear this young girl breathe such fire into this song. I mean, it really sent the proverbial tingles up my spine,” he added.

Before long, the rest of the country would feel it, too. Houston made her album debut in 1985 with “Whitney Houston,” which sold millions and spawned hit after hit. “Saving All My Love for You” brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. “How Will I Know,” ”You Give Good Love” and “The Greatest Love of All” also became hit singles.

Another multiplatinum album, “Whitney,” came out in 1987 and included hits like “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

The New York Times wrote that Houston “possesses one of her generation’s most powerful gospel-trained voices, but she eschews many of the churchier mannerisms of her forerunners. She uses ornamental gospel phrasing only sparingly, and instead of projecting an earthy, tearful vulnerability, communicates cool self-assurance and strength, building pop ballads to majestic, sustained peaks of intensity.”

Her decision not to follow the more soulful inflections of singers like Franklin drew criticism by some who saw her as playing down her black roots to go pop and reach white audiences. The criticism would become a constant refrain through much of her career. She was even booed during the “Soul Train Awards” in 1989.

“Sometimes it gets down to that, you know?” she told Katie Couric in 1996. “You’re not black enough for them. I don’t know. You’re not R&B enough. You’re very pop. The white audience has taken you away from them.”

Some saw her 1992 marriage to former New Edition member and soul crooner Bobby Brown as an attempt to refute those critics. It seemed to be an odd union; she was seen as pop’s pure princess while he had a bad-boy image, and already had children of his own. (The couple had a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in 1993.) Over the years, he would be arrested several times, on charges ranging from DUI to failure to pay child support.

But Houston said their true personalities were not as far apart as people may have believed.

“When you love, you love. I mean, do you stop loving somebody because you have different images? You know, Bobby and I basically come from the same place,” she told Rolling Stone in 1993. “You see somebody, and you deal with their image, that’s their image. It’s part of them, it’s not the whole picture. I am not always in a sequined gown. I am nobody’s angel. I can get down and dirty. I can get raunchy.”

It would take several years, however, for the public to see that side of Houston. Her moving 1991 rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at the Super Bowl, amid the first Gulf War, set a new standard and once again reaffirmed her as America’s sweetheart.

In 1992, she became a star in the acting world with “The Bodyguard.” Despite mixed reviews, the story of a singer (Houston) guarded by a former Secret Service agent (Kevin Costner) was an international success.

It also gave her perhaps her most memorable hit: a searing, stunning rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” which sat atop the charts for weeks. It was Grammy’s record of the year and best female pop vocal, and the “Bodyguard” soundtrack was named album of the year.

She returned to the big screen in 1995-96 with “Waiting to Exhale” and “The Preacher’s Wife.” Both spawned soundtrack albums, and another hit studio album, “My Love Is Your Love,” in 1998, brought her a Grammy for best female R&B vocal for the cut “It’s Not Right But It’s Okay.”

But during these career and personal highs, Houston was using drugs. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2010, she said by the time “The Preacher’s Wife” was released, “(doing drugs) was an everyday thing. … I would do my work, but after I did my work, for a whole year or two, it was every day. … I wasn’t happy by that point in time. I was losing myself.”

In the interview, Houston blamed her rocky marriage to Brown, which included a charge of domestic abuse against Brown in 1993. They divorced in 2007.

Houston would go to rehab twice before she would declare herself drug-free to Winfrey in 2010. But in the interim, there were missed concert dates, a stop at an airport due to drugs, and public meltdowns.

She was so startlingly thin during a 2001 Michael Jackson tribute concert that rumors spread she had died the next day. Her crude behavior and jittery appearance on Brown’s reality show, “Being Bobby Brown,” was an example of her sad decline. Her Sawyer interview, where she declared “crack is whack,” was often parodied. She dropped out of the spotlight for a few years.

Houston staged what seemed to be a successful comeback with the 2009 album “I Look To You.” The album debuted on the top of the charts, and would eventually go platinum.

Things soon fell apart. A concert to promote the album on “Good Morning America” went awry as Houston’s voice sounded ragged and off-key. She blamed an interview with Winfrey for straining her voice.

A world tour launched overseas, however, only confirmed suspicions that Houston had lost her treasured gift, as she failed to hit notes and left many fans unimpressed; some walked out. Canceled concert dates raised speculation that she may have been abusing drugs, but she denied those claims and said she was in great shape, blaming illness for cancellations.

Simon Cowell was reportedly considering Houston to fill a judges seat on Fox’s second season of  “X Factor.”

Houston had recently finished filming a starring role in the remake of the 1976 film “Sparkle.” Saturday evening, a spokesperson for Sony Pictures said the movie’s August 17th release date remains firm.

Neil Portnow, president and CEO of the Recording Academy, said in a statement, “Six-time Grammy-winner Whitney Houston was one of the world’s greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades. Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs. A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice.”

In a later report for CBS2 and KCAL9, Edward Lawrence said scores of fans have gathered outside the Hilton. “Many are holding candles and many are singing her songs.”

He spoke to fan Melody Daff who said the singer’s death hit close to home. “I’m 48. She was 48.”

PASADENA (CBS) — Officials say Arune Kavaliauskaite, who appears in a music video on youtube, used her car Friday as a deadly weapon against a Los Angeles County Park employee.

Authorities say the employee repeatedly warned Kavaliauskaite about having her dog unleashed in Eaton Canyon Nature Center in Pasadena.

Kristine Lazar, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, talked to sheriff’s deputies about the incident.

Lazar reports words were allegedly exchanged between Kavaliauskaite — who was sunbathing — and the park employee after the employee warned the rocker to leash her dog for a third time.

Kavaliauskaite allegedly then got in her white Mustang and struck the employee with her vehicle, leaving her with injuries to her legs — cuts, bruises and some swelling.

Kavaliauskaite, 28, a resident of Altadena, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Parks Bureau.

The county worker, who was not named, was released from a hospital several hours after the incident.

Deputies told Lazar that the rocker was the aggressor. After the third warning, the worker called her office for help after Kavaliauskaite allegedly became hostile. Sheriff’s deputy Johnie Jones described her behavior as “bizarre and erratic.” He added, “She got very angry with [the employee]. She started cursing at her. The situation was going south.”

Jones said the park employee tried to take a photo of the Mustang’s license plate when Kavaliauskaite tried to run her over and accelerated her vehicle. When she left the scene, sheriff’s say the car rolled over the top of the park employee’s shoes.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Kavaliauskaite at her home later that evening, and she was held on $35,000 bail. The Mustang was taken in for evidence.

A court date was scheduled for Tuesday in Superior Court in Pasadena.

TORRANCE (CBS) — Talk about bad timing!

Nearly 800 customers lost power in Torrance, in the middle of Super Bowl Sunday, a utility official said.

The outage began around 4 p.m. due to some downed wires near 182nd Street and Crenshaw Boulevard, said Vanessa McGrady of Southern California Edison.

“We have crews out working now,” McGrady said. “There are 791 customers affected, and we do not have an estimated time of restoration.”

The cause of the downed wires was unknown.

Carrie Gordon, a spokesperson for the actress, issued this statement on January 24, “Because of the stresses in her life right now, Demi has chosen to seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health. She looks forward to getting well and is grateful for the support of her family and friends.”

She added that there would be no further comment beyond this statement.

Moore, 49, was hospitalized on January 23 after a friend called 911 saying the actress was convulsing at her home after “smoking something.”

E! Online reported Saturday Moore has checked into a rehab program at the Cirque Lodge, a clinic in Utah.

The actress is reportedly battling addictions and an eating disorder.

She ended her six-year May-December marriage to actor-producer Ashton Kutcher in November 2011 over reports of his alleged infidelity.

Unconfirmed reports said Moore’s ex-husband, Bruce Willis, urged his ex wife to seek treatment.

King’s son-in-law Allison Burnett says the filmmaker died Friday morning at his home in Santa Monica, Calif., after a six-year battle with cancer.

Born Zalman King Lefkovitz in 1941, King began his career as an actor in the 1960s. He and wife, Patricia Louisianna Knop, collaborated on the screenplay for “9 1/2 Weeks,” which became a cult hit starring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke.

King’s other credits include “Wild Orchid” and “Two Moon Junction,” which he wrote and directed.

King was also known for being executive producer of cable’s steamy “Red Shoe Diaries” that ran from 1992-99.

He is survived by his wife and daughters Chloe King and Gillian Lefkovitz.

HOLLYWOOD (CBS) — A woman dressed as Catwoman pepper-sprayed a reportedly out-of-control costumed character — described as either Captain Jack Sparrow or Ozzy Osbourne — in front the Kodak Theater Thursday night.

The scuffle in the 6800 block of Hollywood Boulevard was witnessed by several superheroes and aliens.

Witnesses said the unruly impersonator had been bugging several other characters throughout the afternoon, but gave extra attention to Catwoman, harassing her for quite some time.

“I heard a scream. ‘Ahhh!’ and it was Catwoman. You know Catwoman? There was Catwoman with a spray,” a man dressed as Captain America told CBS2. “Because she was really pissed off with the guy who plays Ozzy Osbourne, you know? Because he was bothering her. Annoying, saying nasty things.”

The fight is the latest incident involving people who dress as characters to compete for handouts and donations from tourists.

A man dressed as SpongeBob SquarePants was arrested last September after getting into a street brawl with two females, believed to be tourists.

In another incident last year, a YouTube video was posted showing an “Elmo” character getting into a fight; and in 2009, a Spider-Man allegedly punched another person.

The LAPD has been looking at these incidents for quite some time, and made a string of arrests a few years ago. In fact, there was a “super hero” summit called over tension between police and the characters, who felt they were being bullied with so many arrests at the time.

City regulations permit people to tip the characters for their performances, but prohibit them from demanding payment.

Police, who are still investigating the incident, say no arrests were made and no injuries were reported.

The board met via video conference in New York and Los Angeles to vote on the merger package, which includes a merger agreement, a constitution and a dues structure and a proposed new name for the joint performer’s union — SAG-AFTRA, according to Leslie Simmons of AFTRA.

The AFTRA national board voted unanimously to recommend the terms for ratification. Ballots on the Network Television Code will be sent out Monday with a return date of Feb. 22, Simmons said in a statement.

The Network Television Code contract covers soaps, talk and magazine shows including programs “The Young and the Restless,” “Good Morning America,” “The View,” “The Voice,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Nightline,” “Dancing with the Stars,” and “Late Night with David Letterman.”

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — In court papers filed Friday, Michael Jackson’s personal physician asked to be released from jail while he appeals his involuntary manslaughter conviction.

In a written declaration, Dr. Conrad Murray asked Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor to release him on his own recognizance or on bail pending his appeal.

Murray noted in the declaration that he has been informed by his appellate attorney “that my appeal will take well over a year before an opinion is rendered.”

“I am aware of the fact that I will have to serve out the remainder of my sentence less credit for the time I have served if I am not successful on appeal,” wrote Murray, who was sentenced Nov. 29 to four years in county jail.

Murray, who will turn 59 next month, has been behind bars since being convicted Nov. 7.

The defense is asking that the request be heard Feb. 24.

In his declaration, Murray wrote that he would comply with any conditions such as electronic monitoring and would live with Nicole Alvarez and the couple’s son, who will turn 3 in March. He also said he would “endeavor to seek employment within the parameters allowed by the court so that I could contribute to the support of each of my children.”

In court papers filed along with the declaration, defense attorney J. Michael Flanagan wrote that Murray’s sentence “is very severe when considering his life history and the isolated and unusual circumstances giving rise to the facts upon which his conviction was based.”

In the filing, Flanagan wrote that Murray’s conviction “arose out of facts that were the result of an unusual situation, a close friendship with Michael Jackson and a desire to assist him through a difficult situation. Dr. Murray may have made wrong choices and not have exercised good medical judgment at times, but he never intended to injure anyone.”

The defense attorney also noted that Murray is jailed under “maximum security” conditions. He is isolated in a solitary cell and only taken out with his hands chained to his waist when he is escorted by several sheriff’s deputies, and that he is “always chained to a table when he meets with his lawyer in the attorney conference room.”

Hegyes, who played Juan Epstein on the 70′s sitcom,” died of an apparent heart attack in his New Jersey home. Hegyes was 60.

Hegyes also appeared as a guest star on a variety of TV shows including “Diagnosis Murder,” “The Drew Carey Show,” as well as a recurring role on the cop drama “Cagney & Lacey.”

Cousin of both Jon Bon Jovi and Mario Lanza, Hegyes hailed from Perth Amboy, New Jersey.

He is survived by six children, four from his relationship with Cynthia Wylie (1994-2007). Hegyes was married and divorced three times.

For many years, Hegyes lived in Venice, California and helped develop the Web series, “The Venice Walk.”

“Welcome Back, Kotter” ran from 1975-1979 and helped launch actor John Travolta’s movie career. The popular sitcom centered around teacher Gabe Kotter (comic Gabe Kaplan) returning to his old high school and working with a bunch of trouble makers known as the Sweathogs.

Hegyes would have been 61 in May.

He is accused of allegedly roughing up his estranged wife in Palm Springs during an argument about their 5-year-old son.

London was charged Monday with a misdemeanor count of battery of a spouse or cohabitant. He pleaded not guilty to the charge at his arraignment today at the Larson Justice Center, and Riverside County Superior Court Judge B.J. Bjork also issued a restraining order requiring him to have no contact with the woman, according to court records. He is due back in court March 15 for a pretrial hearing.

The alleged victim, who was identified as “Jane Doe” in the criminal complaint, called police the morning of Nov. 18 to claim that London, 39, hurt her when they were outside London’s car — while their son was in the vehicle, Palm Springs police Detective Michael Studer wrote in a declaration in support of arrest filed Monday.

The woman told police the scuffle happened outside a home in the Mountain Gate complex at 400 Gateway Drive.

Studer wrote that London, who had stayed overnight at the home, put the couple’s son, still wearing pajamas, into his car. London told his estranged wife he was taking their son to breakfast, Studer wrote.

“(She) said (their son) was yelling, `I don’t want to go,’ ” Studer wrote.

When the woman grabbed London’s backpack from his car in attempt to stop them from leaving, “London grabbed her by her hair, pulling her to the ground,” Studer wrote. “… London hit her several times on the side of the head in an attempt to take the backpack away. (She) said eventually she let go of the backpack and got up off the ground to get (the boy) out of the car.”

London left immediately after the incident, Studer wrote.

He wrote that the 5-year-old boy told a police officer that his father pulled his mother’s hair, and “My dad was a bad boy.”

London has a child with Melissa Cunningham, whom he married in 2006 and from whom he is separated.

The woman who called police said she had been separated from London for two years and had been unable to divorce him for financial reasons, and because he wouldn’t sign the paperwork, Studer wrote.

In June 2010, London made headlines when he said he was kidnapped and robbed in Palm Springs and forced to buy drugs and alcohol at gunpoint before escaping from his abductors.

In March, one of the men involved pleaded guilty to a felony charge of false imprisonment and a misdemeanor count of unlawful taking of a vehicle. He was sentenced to 16 months in prison, but with time already served and other credits, he was released from a Banning jail the day he entered the plea, according to court records.

District Attorney’s Office spokesman John Hall said London could get up to a year in county jail if convicted of the battery charge.

NEW YORK (AP) — The seemingly perfect marriage of Seal and Heidi Klum is heading to an end.

In a statement Sunday night, the power-couple announced their separation. They say after “much soul searching” they’ve decided to separate, and blame the breakup on “growing apart.”

The couple has four children together, including the supermodel’s daughter from a previous relationship. The couple asks for privacy and say that the breakup is “amicable.”

The singer and model were one of the most high-profile celebrity couples, and often talked about their tight relationship. They even renewed their vows on each anniversary.

They married in 2005.

BEVERLY HILLS (CBS) —  The black-and-white, silent Hollywood homage “The Artist” and writer/director Alexander Payne’s family drama “The Descendants” will be among the films looking for a major boost toward the Oscars Saturday night at the Producers Guild of America Awards.

The guild’s Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award in Theatrical Motion Pictures is historically one of the most accurate predictors of best-picture success on Oscar night, making it a big get for film producers.

“The Artist” and “The Descendants” — which took home Golden Globe Awards for best musical/comedy and drama film, respectively — will compete for the top film honor with “Bridesmaids,” “Moneyball,” “War Horse,” “The Help,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Hugo,” “The Ides of March” and “Midnight in Paris.”

Nominees for animated films are Golden Globe winner “The Adventures of Tintin,” “Cars 2,” “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Puss in Boots” and “Rango.”

For made-for-television movies and miniseries, the producers of “Cinema Verite,” “Mildred Pierce” and “Too Big to Fail,” all of which aired on HBO, are nominated, along with PBS’ “Downton Abbey” and the ReelzChannel’s “The Kennedys.”

The 74-year-old Threlkeld died Friday morning in Amagansett, N.Y., when his car collided with a propane tanker. He was pronounced dead at Southampton Hospital, according to the East Hampton, N.Y., Police Department. He lived in nearby East Hampton.

The driver of the tanker, Earl Fryberger Jr., of Coatesville, Penn., was not injured, said police, who are investigating the accident.

Threlkeld spent more than 25 years at CBS News before retiring in 1998. He was a reporter, anchor and bureau chief who covered the Persian Gulf War and the Vietnam War, the Patty Hearst kidnapping and trial, the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, and the execution of Gary Gilmore.

He was one of the last journalists evacuated from Phnom Penh and Saigon when those cities fell to the Communists in 1975.

CBS News correspondent Bob Simon was with him when Saigon fell.

“Richard was old school in the best sense,” Simon said. “He really didn’t give a damn about being on camera. He didn’t do many stand-ups. He always figured there was more interesting footage than himself.”

Threlkeld covered the presidential campaigns of candidates ranging from Barry Goldwater and Lyndon Johnson in the 1960s to Bill Clinton in the 1990s. He worked alongside Lesley Stahl as co-anchor of “The CBS Morning News” from 1977-79, and reported for “CBS Sunday Morning” from its inception in 1979, as well as for “The CBS Evening News With Dan Rather.”

In 1981, he decided to jump to up-and-coming ABC News without fanfare and without telling CBS. He returned to CBS News in 1989. His final assignment at CBS was as Moscow correspondent. From that experience, he wrote a book, “Dispatches from the Former Evil Empire,” which was published in 2001.

His last appearance on CBS was in 2004 on “Sunday Morning,” when he came out of retirement to help celebrate the broadcast’s 25th anniversary by doing a feature story.

Threlkeld originally joined CBS News in 1966 as a producer-editor based in New York.

Born on Nov. 30, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he was raised in Barrington, Ill. He graduated from Ripon (Wis.) College and earned a master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

During his career, he won several Emmy and Overseas Press Club awards and an Alfred I. du Pont-Columbia University Award.

He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Betsy Aaron, a former CBS and CNN correspondent; a brother, Robert, of Port Townsend, Wash.; two children, Susan Paulukonis, of Alameda, Calif., and Julia Threlkeld of Yonkers, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

HOLLYWOOD (CBS) — “The Artist” was named best picture at tonight’s 17th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards at the Hollywood Palladium.

Michel Hazanavicius, who directed the black-and-white silent movie homage, was named best director. The movie also won for best costume design and best score.

George Clooney took the best actor award for his performance in”The Descendants” and Viola Davis was the best actress winner for her work in “The Help.” Her castmate Octavia Spencer won for best supporting actress. “The Help” also won for best acting ensemble.

Christopher Plummer won for best supporting actor for his role in “Beginners.”

The other acting award went to Thomas Horn of “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” for best young actor or actress.

“Hugo,” whose 11 nominations matched “The Artist” for the most, won just one award, for art direction.

Clooney presented actor Sean Penn with the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s fifth annual Joel Siegel Award in recognition of his humanitarian work, most notably on behalf of the victims of the 2010 earthquake that rocked Haiti and killed more than 200,000 people.

Penn founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization after the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake. The organization has continued to raise money and awareness of the disaster to provide relief to Haiti.

The Critics’ Choice Awards are presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

Martin Scorsese, a best director nominee for “Hugo,” was presented with the Critics’ Choice Music+Film Award honoring his cinematic storytelling and use of music to heighten the impact of his films.

The association cited not only Scorsese’s feature films — such as “Mean Streets,” “GoodFellas” and “The Departed” — as examples of his use of music in motion pictures, but his documentary work focusing on artists such as The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and George Harrison.

The ceremony was hosted by comedians Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel.

In an upcoming episode of ABC’s “Modern Family”, 2-year-old Lily will use profanity after picking up the word from her same-sex parents Cam and Mitchell.

The episode may be the first time in TV history where a child uses the “F-word” in a scripted TV show on a major network, according to Entertainment Weekly.

While it will not audible to the viewer, Lily — played by 4-year-old Aubrey Anderson-Emmons — will be shown on camera saying the word, said “Modern Family” creator Steven Levitan.

The Emmy-winning comedy has been a lightning rod for controversy as one of the few shows on TV depicting a family with two gay men as its lead characters.

Levitan reportedly revealed the details of the “Little Bo Bleep” episode at a news conference in Pasadena, where he said it’s easy for people to object to gay parents in concept.

“When you make it personal and show the people have good hearts and are extremely committed, loving parents, it’s hard not to love them,” he said. “I’m pleasantly surprised with the world’s reaction to that particular part of our modern family.”

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — For the first time in its 60 year history, openly lesbian contestants are competing to wear the sash and crown of Miss California.

The winner goes on to represent the state in the Miss USA pageant.

Mollie Thomas, 19, of West Hollywood and Jenelle Hutcherson, 26, of Long Beach are the two battling it out for the top spot at Indian Wells.

According to the Los Angeles Times, more than 400 women are vying for Miss California USA and Miss California Teen USA, compared to 378 who competed in 2011.

The first round, held Saturday evening, will see the contestants in swimsuits and evening wear.

Both Thomas and Hutcherson were reportedly recruited to enter the pageant.

The newspaper says Thomas is a part-time student at UCLA. This is her first pageant. She decided to enter to represent the LGBT community in a positive light.

Hutcherson entered for similar reasons and also hopes to be a role model for young people. For tonight’s evening gown competition, Hutcherson — a mentor at the LGBT center in Long Beach — wore a tux.

It’s Huong Hoang of Texas, who may be better known by her stage name, Junie Hoang. She has appeared in such films as “Gingerdead Man 3: Saturday Night Cleaver” and “Hoodrats 2: Hoodrat Warriors.”

The actress filed a million-dollar claim against Amazon, saying the company mined her IMDb account information to learn her advanced age, which is 40, and then posted it on her profile — causing her offers for roles to dry up. Last month a federal judge in Seattle ordered the lawsuit dismissed, saying she had no grounds to proceed with an anonymous complaint.

Hoang refiled her lawsuit Friday under her real name.

Debbie Cobb, outreach director at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, said Wednesday that her grandparents acquired Cheetah around 1960 from “Tarzan” star Johnny Weissmuller and that the chimp appeared in Tarzan films between 1932 and 1934. During that period, Weissmuller made “Tarzan the Ape Man” and “Tarzan and His Mate.”

But Cobb offered no documentation, saying it was destroyed in a 1995 fire.

Also, some Hollywood accounts indicate a chimpanzee by the name of Jiggs or Mr. Jiggs played Cheetah alongside Weissmuller early on and died in 1938.

In addition, an 80-year-old chimpanzee would be extraordinarily old, perhaps the oldest ever known. According to many experts and Save the Chimps, another Florida sanctuary, chimpanzees in captivity generally live to between 40 and 60, though Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, Fla., says it has one that is around 73.

A similar claim about another chimpanzee that supposedly played second banana to Weissmuller was debunked in 2008 in a Washington Post story.

Writer R.D. Rosen discovered that the primate, which lived in Palm Springs, Calif., was born around 1960, meaning it wasn’t oldest enough to have been in the Tarzan movies of Hollywood’s Golden Age that starred Olympic swimming star Weissmuller as the vine-swinging, loincloth-wearing Ape Man and Maureen O’Sullivan as Jane.

While a number of chimpanzees played the sidekick role in the Tarzan movies of the 1930s and ’40s, Rosen said in an email Wednesday that this latest purported Cheetah looks like a “business-boosting impostor as well.”

“I’m afraid any chimp who actually shared a soundstage with Weissmuller and O’Sullivan is long gone,” Rosen said.

Cobb said Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure and was cremated.

“Unfortunately, there was a fire in ’95 in which a lot of that documentation burned up,” Cobb said. “I’m 51 and I’ve known him for 51 years. My first remembrance of him coming here was when I was actually 5, and I’ve known him since then, and he was a full-grown chimp then.”

Film historian and Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osbourne said the Cheetah character “was one of the things people loved about the Tarzan movies because he made people laugh. He was always a regular fun part of the movies.”

In his time, the Cheetah character was as popular as Rin Tin Tin or Asta, the dog from the “Thin Man” movies, Osbourne said.

“He was a major star,” he said.

At the animal sanctuary, Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh, Cobb said. But he could also be ill-tempered. Cobb said that when the chimp didn’t like what was going on, he would fling feces and other objects.

LOS ANGELES (CBS) —  The Los Angeles Lakers will open their lockout- delayed season Sunday at Staples Center, facing the Chicago Bulls in their 13th consecutive Christmas Day game, with Kobe Bryant setting a record as soon as he takes the court.

This will be Bryant’s 14th Christmas Day game, the most in NBA history, breaking a tie with former teammate Shaquille O’Neal, Earl Monroe and Dolph Schayes.

Bryant smiled when a reporter told him after today’s practice at the Toyota Sports Center that he would set the record Sunday.

“Wow,” Bryant said. “That’s pretty cool. I’m very fortunate.”

While then-Laker coach Phil Jackson said last year that the increase in Christmas Day games from two to five showed “it’s like the Christmas holidays don’t mean anything to them anymore. Just go out and play and entertain the TV (audience),” Bryant called playing on Christmas great.

“The older you get, the more you appreciate it,” said Bryant, whose 321 points on Christmas Day games is second-most in NBA history behind Oscar Robertson’s 377.

“It’s fun. There’s only a certain amount of games that are slotted to play that day and you’re fortunate to be a part of it. The truth of the matter is we’ll all miss it when we’re not here anymore, so you really want to enjoy it while you can.”

Guard Derek Fisher said “you have mixed emotions from a family standpoint” about the Lakers’ annually playing Christmas Day games.

“It would be obviously be better on a personal level to spend time with your kids and family and maybe be around the family table watching somebody else play,” Fisher said.

“But at the same time, for myself and a lot of our guys know how fortunate of a position we’re in to be one of the marquee teams fans around the world like to see on Christmas Day.

“Your grow up watching big-time pro sports on television on holidays and that’s all you want to be when you’re 8 years old is that guy on TV and now you’re one of those guys. You have to be able to take that with you.”

The other two major North American professional sports leagues whose seasons include Christmas have far more restrictions about playing on Christmas than the NBA.

The NFL’s practice is to avoid playing on Christmas Day and the night of Christmas Eve, Greg Aiello, the league’s senior vice president of communications, told City News Service.

With Christmas falling on a Sunday this year, the NFL played 13 Saturday afternoon games, instead of Sunday afternoon, and one game on Sunday night. The National Hockey League’s collective bargaining agreement with its players’ association forbids games from being played on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve, said John Dellapina, its vice president of communications. Teams are also not permitted to practice or travel on either day.

Fisher, the president of the National Basketball Players Association, the union representing the league’s players, said there was no discussion about restricting play on Christmas Day during the recently completed negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.

“In our sport, because of how long the season is, to get into trying to single out particular holidays would be tough to do,” Fisher said. “We haven’t heard enough from a high number of our players that it’s a big issue.

“By and large, all the guys would love to be able to spend the holidays with their families. I think they respect there are certain things that come with this profession and working on holidays is one of those things. If it becomes an issue in the future, we’ll try to deal with it accordingly.”

During a span where they won five NBA championships, the Lakers are 4-8 in their last 12 Christmas Day games, including losses to Miami and Cleveland the past two seasons.

“There’s not a special focus on Christmas Day in terms of the game itself,” Fisher said.

“You see all the banners on the walls. You don’t win those banners on Christmas Day. Being 4-8, although it may be disappointing in the moment, we got a banner five times. I’ll take a Christmas Day loss for a championship trophy any day.”

The game marks the debut of Mike Brown as the Lakers’ coach.

“Just being here is special,” said Brown, named in May to succeed Jackson, who retired at the conclusion of last season.

“I thank my lucky stars and Dr. (Jerry) Buss, Jim Buss and Mitch Kupchak every day,” Brown said, referring to the team’s owner, a son who is its executive vice president, player personnel and general manager.

“To me, this is a dream job. To be able walk in this building, work with these guys, let alone coach them… you couldn’t ask for anything better.”

When asked how important Sunday’s game was, Brown responded, “It’s important from the standpoint that it’s our next one, but does it define who we are? No, it doesn’t.

“It definitely helps us get a better feel every time we step out on the floor, especially every time we step on the floor against a different color jersey, it helps us figure who we are a little better.

The Lakers will be playing without starting center Andrew Bynum, who will be beginning a four-game suspension for his flagrant foul on then-Dallas point guard J.J. Barea in the Lakers’ final game last season.

Pau Gasol, usually a forward, will start at center, while recent free agent singee Josh McRoberts will start at Gasol’s power forward position.

The Lakers are also making a second change to their starting lineup with Devin Ebanks replacing Metta World Peace (the player formerly known as Ron Artest) at small forward.
