Could Chocolate Soon Be Extinct?

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — Climate change could make chocolate obsolete.

Scientists predict cacao plants could become extinct by 2050. The plants, which are used to make chocolate and cocoa powder, are mostly found in the rain forests in Africa. Scientists say they are threatened by higher temperatures caused by climate change.

The Mars candy company is teaming up with UC Berkeley to modify the DNA of cacao plants and that could allow them to grow in hotter weather.
