DNA Test Shows Subway’s Chicken May Only Be 50% Chicken

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — If you thought that chicken sandwich you ordered at Subway did not fully taste like fowl, you may have been right.

According to a Canadian report, a DNA test shows only half of Subway’s oven-roasted chicken patty is made with real chicken.

Subway is among five fast-food restaurants whose chicken the Canadian Broadcast Corporation had tested.

The results show the Oven Roasted Chicken patty is 53.6 percent chicken while the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki strip is 42.8 percent chicken, according to a CBC Marketplace investigation.

The rest is made of soy, CBC reports.

The sandwich chain disputes the report in a released statement:

“SUBWAY Canada cannot confirm the veracity of the results of the lab testing you had conducted. However, we are concerned by the alleged findings you cite with respect to the proportion of soy content. Our chicken strips and oven roasted chicken contain 1% or less of soy protein. We use this ingredient in these products as a means to help stabilize the texture and moisture. All of our chicken items are made from 100% white meat chicken which is marinated, oven roasted and grilled. We tested our chicken products recently for nutritional and quality attributes and found it met our food quality standards. We will look into this again with our supplier to ensure that the chicken is meeting the high standard we set for all of our menu items and ingredients.”

The same test was done on the chicken at Wendy’s and McDonald’s.

Wendy’s grilled chicken sandwich is 88.5 percent chicken while McDonald’s Grilled Country Chicken is 84.9 percent chicken, according to the findings.

Wendy’s response: “Wendy’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich is a whole muscle chicken breast fillet; not reformed or restructured. In addition, we use only 100% Canadian chicken in Canada. For our grilled chicken sandwich and other grilled chicken products (salads, wraps, etc.) we use a juicy, all-white meat chicken breast fillet, marinated in a blend of herbs. We do not provide ingredient percentages as we consider that information to be proprietary.”

McDonald’s response: “Our grilled chicken sandwich is made with 100% seasoned chicken breast. The chicken breast is (a single piece) trimmed for size to fit the sandwich. We don’t release the percentage of each ingredient for competitive reasons, but on the nutrition centre people can see that our grilled chicken includes seasoning and other ingredients, just like at home.”

  1. According to a TDEC official (Deputy Director) I spoke to once, most of their “beef” products are actually PORK dyed and flavored, at least at the facility in Tennessee that she visited.

    1. She said they supplied Subway…according to Subway’s directions.

      1. Walter Jones says:

What percentage of the chicken sandwich is spittle and deep loogies from the employees?

      2. Carl Quick says:

In many cases, almost everything is 50% BS.
“Exempt income” and “Income that is not” are codified into law, and it says most Americans owe no income tax, yet half the sheeple still pay it.

  3. Jack Inmanz says:

The rest is underaged girls. How’s things in prison, Jared?

  4. Jeffrey Gee says:

The other 50% is Soylent Green AKA people!

  5. Max Conrad says:

All it takes is one look at their “chicken” to know that it’s squirted out of a tube.

  7. Roe Bauer says:

    Hmmmmm…… Someone is after Subway…..!!!!

    1. Jerry Walton says:

Somebody needs to check to see if George Soros short sold his Subway stock.

  8. According to numerous people I know, haveing a large percentage of soy would make the product healthier and more desirable than 100% chicken. Especially if it tastes like chicken. Wel,l off to have the Tofurky Burger at that new place, The Brussell Sprout.

    1. Too much soy is bad for you. It is known to decrease testosterone in males and estrogen in females. It makes each sex undesirable to each other and is known too cause body odor.

    2. Soy is not good for men, unless you like bigger breasts.

  9. Yirmin Snipe says:

Considering the minuscule amount of meat on any Subway sandwich what difference does the percentage make most of what you get are bread and filler.

    1. Well said!
The amount of meat is really disappointing, unless you want to pay a lot for extra meat.

  10. i’m surprised it’s tht high.

  11. Sounds like they swabbed the meat and tested that, as oppose to actually testing the meat.

  12. Bill Kearns says:

You get what you pay for! Discount pricing, discount products. Pour franchisees. how do they make a buck?

  13. I recently ate some rattlesnake meat, it tasted like chicken.

    1. I recently ate some chicken, it tasted like rattlesnake meat.

  14. Gary L Trout says:

At this point, what difference does it make?

  15. Much of the deli meats we buy, turkey, ham, chicken are injected with salt water, saline. Adds weight and most people don’t know what real deli meats should taste like.

  16. theotherhanddude says:

I suppose if the other half is soy, its far better than to find out its rat filler.

  17. I quit eating at Subway 40 years ago when the meat started tasting like plastic.

  18. A former employee told us never buy anything chicken from Subway.

  19. just remember, whatever you THINK you know, you are probably wrong

  20. Bob Liberty says:

All commercially processed food is injected with additives to add weight but a 50% injection of soy or other additives is more than most people can stomach. You are what you eat and you get what you pay for. Cheap food is cheap for a reason. Most burgers contain 10% soy and the government allows then to be labeled as 100% beef.

    1. McDonalds and other burger places, the burgers are 13% beef

  21. Joseph Lizak says:

It’s only fitting that my Subway chicken sandwich is made mostly of soy (the most Genetically Modified Organism product on the market) as it goes along nicely with Subways rubber yoga mat bread.

  22. JD Chris says:

Now that they’re busted, Subway will “check back with their supplier”. That’s so convenient an excuse. “We knew our chicken was half soy, but now that we’ve been exposed, we’ll use the excuse that it’s our suppliers fault.” HAHAHA!

  23. Men, if you are growing breasts unintentionally, cut back on soy.

    1. Soy has an estrogen effect on the body. Soy is in so many things.

  24. Made with 100% white chicken, the 100% refers to the white and not to the chicken. It could be 1% chicken, and it’s 100% white, the other 99% can be cow turds and the description is still grammatically correct.

  25. Well to be fair the people Jared liked were 50 percent adults

  26. No surprise here. The owner is a right wing nut bar. Only motivated by greed. Remind you of anyone?

    1. I did not know that the owner was a rightwing regular American. I will be going there more often.

  27. HerbB52 says:

The question is, “If they did a DNA test on the sandwich what is the DNA of the remainder of the “meat” in the sandwich. Any other meat or even vegetable filler would have DNA that could be tested. Sounds bogus to me.

    1. HerbB52 says:

Not only that, but cooking would tend to break down the DNA in the chicken.

  28. The food police are really annoying.

  29. Mark DeFazio says:

There is a load of missing information in this study. First of all it was taken in Canada. Not all meat Subway uses derives from the same supplier. They uses several suppliers. Were these samples taken only in Canadian Subway restaurants or were any U.S. locations also sampled? Maybe there was selected tampering by one supplier. This study did not disclose so much information it is difficult to discern whether their test is accurate.

  30. Soy so that means that it is a GMO product and your sandwich is full of glyphosate

  31. I never like subway it’s not the best sandwich

  32. Nothing screams “Kids in the Hall” skit like Canadians fighting over chicken DNA and soy content…

  33. Subway. If it’s NOT chicken it is not Chicken, and it IS a LIE.
How much of your beef is beef?
It’s time to check all of these people, point out the Problems and the SUE and get
    judgements for lying.

  34. Ra Williams says:

I ate a Hungry Man BBQ dinner with a chicken piece and a pork piece. OMG the “meat” was so processed (pink slime except for chicken and pork). That’s what I get for paying $2.50. I will stick to the ground fake meat and small pieces of fake chicken in noodles next time in my TV dinners.

  35. What you spend on one of those meals I can cook 1 week of food for myself. Fresh wholesome food that I know what is inside.

  36. Stan Bowery says:

“Our chicken strips and oven roasted chicken contain 1% or less of soy protein.” then something is VERY wrong with someones math. Yes? You also gotta love how Wendys gets the word ‘juicy’ in their reply. Clever.

  37. And in another study it say the “mainstream media” is 100% full of liberal bulls**t!
