LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Firecrackers were lit ahead of a run in Los Angeles’ historic Chinatown in celebration of the Lunar New Year.

The Firecracker Run, now in its 39th year, kicked off Sunday morning, with CBS2/KCAL9’s Amber Lee serving as emcee.

The 5K/10K races drew thousands of people, and was expected to take runners through the hills of Elysian Park.

The event was put on by volunteers, who say that proceeds will go back to the community.
