Man Shot, Killed By Santa Ana Police Following Foot Chase

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) – A man was shot and killed by officers Sunday evening following a foot pursuit in Santa Ana, police say.

The shooting occurred in the 400 block of South Birch Street sometime before 5:20 p.m.

According to Santa Ana police, the incident began when a patrol vehicle pulled up behind a parked car in an alley way. A passenger jumped out of the car and ran, prompting officers to give chase. The suspect ran in and out of several homes during the pursuit.

He was eventually shot and killed by officers, police said. The man died at the scene. No officers were hurt.

The exact circumstances that precipitated the shooting and the number of officers who fired on the suspect were not confirmed. There was no word on whether the man was armed.

Police at the scene said the neighborhood has seen a spike in gang violence recently.

"It's so violent here because, you don't know if you go into the street if you're going to get shot, or something is going to happen to you," one woman said. "So, everybody is scared here."

Police did not identify the man, but neighbors told KCAL9 he is a 19-year-old father who resides in the area.
