Orange Officer Suffers Major Trauma To Legs, Pelvis After Being Struck By DUI Suspect

ORANGE (CBSLA.com/AP) — Officials in the city of Orange say a police officer's condition is improving after he was critically injured by a suspected drunken driver while responding to a call.

The Orange Police Department said Sunday that the officer, who suffered major trauma to his legs and pelvis, is stable in intensive care.

Officials say while he has shown improvement, the officer is expected to face a long recovery process.

The officer, who was not identified, was responding early Saturday to a report of a vehicle blocking the roadway in the 500 block of North Cambridge, where he found a man asleep at the wheel. He was struck by a 2016 Hyundai while standing outside of his patrol car.

A GoFundMe account was set up for the officer, identified only as Officer S, which had met half its $40,000 goal within one day.

Police arrested 27-year-old Ashley V. Bertolino on suspicion of DUI.
