Southern California Ski Season Opens

BIG BEAR LAKE (AP) — Southern California's ski season is off to a limited start but with more snow in the forecast.

Big Bear Mountain Resort in the San Bernardino Mountains opened Friday and neighboring Snow Summit is expected to open Saturday.

Southern California mountains have received a bit of snow this fall and conditions have enabled snow-making, but the real thing is on its way despite continuing drought.

The National Weather Service says a cold low pressure system in the Gulf of Alaska will drive two storm systems through the region during the weekend.

Rain is expected Saturday afternoon and evening, followed by the coldest storm of the season so far.

Forecasters say snow levels will drop to 5,000 feet Saturday night, and locally to 4,500 feet on Sunday.
