Couple Wanted For Car Buying, Selling Scam In Orange County

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A couple is being sought as part of an ongoing private party car seller scam in Orange County.

Clinton Charles Rose, 35, and Lauren Marie Conkey, 23, were identified by the Orange County Sheriff's Department as suspects in a number of auto and identity theft cases.

The couple allegedly contacts victims who are selling cars through various websites, and purchase the vehicles with fictitious checks and identification, sheriff's Lt. Mark Stichter said, then turn around and use falsified documents to resell the stolen car to another victim.

Rose is described as a white man, 35, 6 feet tall, with brown hair and brown eyes. Conkey is a white woman, 23 years old, with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Authorities say anyone buying or selling any goods or property should be cautious of payment methods in which documents can be falsified during the transaction.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of this or a similar type of scam can call the Orange County Sheriff's Department at (714) 647-7000 to file a report. Anyone with information about Rose and Conkey can call sheriff's Investigator P. White at (949) 425-1876 or the department's Commander at (714) 628-7170.
