Man Armed With Machete Fatally Wounded By Whittier Officers

WHITTIER (CBSLA.com) — A man who allegedly charged at Whittier police officers was fatally shot Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The suspect, who was in his 30s, died at a hospital, authorities said. His name was withheld pending notification of his relatives.

Officers were dispatched to the 13400 block of Penn Street at about 6 a.m. to investigate reports of a man "acting erratically" and armed with a machete.

The man threatened officers with machete, then picked up a stick and threw at one of them, hitting one of the officers, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Jauch said.

Then "the man charged at them with (the) machete," Jauch said. "Two officers opened fire on the man. He was struck multiple times."

He was taken to a hospital, where he died. Homicide detectives have recovered a machete, authorities said.

No officers were injured.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials say homicide detectives were sent out to assist Whittier police in investigating the circumstances that led to the shooting.
