Lancaster Will Honor Slain Officer In Sunday Fundraiser To Benefit Explorers Program

LANCASTER (CBSLA.com) —  Slain Sheriff's Sgt. Steve Owen -- gunned down last month -- will have his life celebrated Sunday in Lancaster.

The celebration is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at Gino's Italian Restaurant (44343 Challenger Way), said Ali Villalobos of the Lancaster Sheriff's Station.

All proceeds from the afternoon of dining and live music will be donated in Owen's name to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Explorers Program. Owen served many years as an adviser to the group.

Owen, 53, was shot and killed around 12:30 p.m. Oct. 5 as he and a deputy responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting a burglary at an apartment building in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7.

The man suspected of killing Owen -- Trenton Trevon Lovell, 27, of Lancaster -- was wounded in a shoulder by a deputy but ultimately arrested and booked on suspicion of murder.

Lowell was being held without bail at the Twin Towers Correction Facility and was charged with capital murder making him eligible for the death penalty. Lovell's next court appearance is set for Monday.
