5 Injured When Pickup Crashes Into Oxnard Apartment

OXNARD (CBSLA.com) — Five people were injured, two critically, when a pickup crashed into an apartment building Monday in Oxnard, authorities said.

A 2-year-old girl and her 8-year-old brother are in critical condition in a hospital, recovering from a crash that also injured their 16-year-old sister, Oxnard police said. Other injuries were listed as minor.

"The little girl, she was actually under the truck. I got her out and broke the window on that side of the house and handed her over to the firefighter," said Alvaro Nunez, who lives nearby.

Police confirmed several people stopped to pull the children out from under the truck. The driver was unconscious and trapped in the truck inside the apartment.

The driver, who was identified Tuesday as Sunny Ramos, 37, was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and driving on a suspended license.

It appeared Ramos drove the truck through a stop sign across the street and didn't try to slow down before heading straight into the apartment, police said.

The truck was moving at a high rate of speed.

"Over 60, honestly," Nunez said. "It was really fast."

Authorities were working to determine if alcohol, drugs or a medical condition played a role in the crash.
