Chief Beck Makes First Public Appearance Since Breaking Pelvis As LA Police Foundation Honors Rams Owner Stan Kroenke

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — LAPD Chief Charlie Beck made his first public appearance Saturday since breaking his pelvis last weekend.

Beck attended the Los Angeles Police Foundation dinner honoring Rams owner Stan Kroenke.

The dinner and fundraising event-- the True Blue Cocktail Gala --  was held in Elysian Park.

CBS2's Jennifer Kastner got to talk to Beck who stood on his own, his crutches never far away.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., guests interacted with more than 20 LAPD units offering interactive displays and demonstrations with the latest state-of-the-art police technology, vehicles, weapons, anti-terrorism and crime-prevention equipment.

The True Blue Cocktail Gala honors outstanding individuals who have demonstrated a profound commitment to public safety and the Los Angeles Police Department.

Beck, 63, told Kastner, "I'm a little banged up but Ill be alright. I'm fine. All this stuff heals. I was lucky. It's not going to require surgery."

Son Martin Beck, an officer, quipped, "He's getting older, so he's a little more brittle. But he's going to keep going as long as he can."

She asked Chief Beck what was the most painful part of his ordeal?

"The hardest part is telling your wife," he quipped, "and then the injury that comes from that."

Beck also told her he hopes to be riding his dirt bike again by the end of December -- assuming of course his doctor and his wife are okay with it.
