Police Ask For Witnesses To Crash That Destroyed McLaren 650 Sports Car

WOODLAND HILLS (CBSLA.com) — Witnesses to a Woodland Hills crash that demolished a McLaren sports car and injured two motorists were sought Wednesday by police investigating the collision.

The crash happened at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at Platt Avenue and Califa Street, LAPD Det. Bill Bustos said.

The lime-green 2015 McLaren 650 -- which has an MSRP of $265,000 -- was going south on Platt Avenue "at a very high rate of speed" when it collided with a 2014 Audi A6 that was turning left from northbound Platt Avenue to go west on Califa Street, Bustos said.

The sports car ended up on the sidewalk, its front end shattered into pieces.

The McLaren was driven by a 49-year-old man, and the Audi was driven by a 71-year-old man. Both drivers, whose names were withheld, were hospitalized with serious injuries, Bustos said.

Detectives' preliminary investigation determined that one or two other cars – possibly a dark-colored Dodge Charger or Challenger, and a gray BMW 5 or 7 series sedan – also may have been southbound on Platt Avenue at the time of the crash but left the scene, Bustos said.

It's not known if there was a speed contest, or if the cars were simply driving fast in the same direction, he said.

Police are looking for security video that may help in the investigation. Anyone with information about the crash can call the Valley Traffic Division at (818) 644-8000.
