As Seen On TV: Does 'Magic Mesh' Work?

STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Living in Southern California, many of us like the indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

But we don't like bugs getting into our homes.

So CBS2's Elsa Ramon decided to test a product called the "Magic Mesh" screen door, which claims to keep fresh air in and flies and other bugs out.

But does it work?

Magic Mesh claims to close by itself when you come in and out while still keeping out the bugs.

After flattening out the mesh and aligning the magnets, we put the Velcro strips on without the tacks - which the directions say should only be applied on wood and moulding - and quickly realized this is definitely a two-person job.

The directions say to make sure the mesh isn't touching the ground and apply pressure to the Velcro for 30 seconds. Since a sliding door is involved, the directions say to hang the Magic Mesh outside of the door frame and to the stationary door.

After going through the Magic Mesh, the magnets wouldn't close. Once the mesh was loosened, however, the mesh easily snapped together - but didn't fully seal to keep flies out.

For someone without a screen door, Magic Mesh could work well for them. But Ramon says the product still has too many gaps to be recommended for most consumers.
