Stabbing Suspect Fatally Shot By Deputy Outside Chatsworth Courthouse

CHATSWORTH (CBSLA.com) — A knife-wielding man was fatally shot Monday by a sheriff's deputy after allegedly stabbing his wife upon their arrival at a Chatsworth courthouse.

Paramedics were sent about 12:05 p.m. to 9425 Penfield Ave. and transported the man and the woman -- who were not immediately identified -- for hospital treatment. The man was pronounced dead Monday afternoon.

The woman was stabbed at least twice, according to witnesses. She was in critical but stable condition.

Witnesses said the suspect and victim arrived at the courthouse together in a black Audi sedan driven by the woman, who asked an attendant at a parking kiosk to call for help.

The woman then got out of the vehicle and ran toward the courthouse door, with the man in pursuit, according to Tom Fehr, an attorney who had business at the courthouse.

Witnesses said that when arriving deputies ordered the suspect to the drop the knife, he failed to comply and was shot.

The courthouse, which handles family disputes such as divorces and custody battles, was closed for the rest of the day and was expected to reopen for business on Tuesday, officials said.

No deputies were injured.
