Portion Of 10 Freeway Named For Officer Gunned Down 2 Years Ago

POMONA (CBSLA.com)  —    A portion of the 10 Freeway in Pomona was named Saturday for an officer who was gunned down two years ago.

As CBS2's Laurie Perez reports, it is a sad anniversary -- Pomona Police Officer Shaun Diamond died after being shot in the line of duty.

Perez spoke to friends and family still mourning his loss.

There's a new sign going up on the 10 through Pomona.

The sign bears Diamond's name. When you pass the sign, his friends and family hope you'll remember him or take the time to find out who he was.

"They will see his sign, his story, see his sacrifice and hopefully that encourages people to keep that going and to live the life that he lived," said Pomona Police Chief Paul Capraro.

Diamond died October 29, 2014, one day after he was shot while serving a search warrant during an investigation into an outlaw motorcycle gang.

In the days that followed, hundreds came out to honor his service of 16 years in law enforcement. That service was honored again Saturday as a crowd gathered to for a bittersweet naming ceremony.

Assemblyman Freddie Rodriguez led the charge to dedicate a part of the freeway in Diamond's memory.

"It didn't really dawn on me until one day I was driving back from Sacramento down the 99 and I seen all these highways named after fallen officers," said Rodriguez.

Rodriguez and others who knew Diamond say the father of two dedicated his life to helping others -- a legacy they hope you'll think of every time you see his name.

Officer Diamond's stretch of the 10 runs from the 57 interchange through Pomona.
