Man Hospitalized After 2 Officer-Involved Shootings In Echo Park

ECHO PARK (CBSLA.com) — A man has been hospitalized after two officer-involved shootings in the Echo Park area.

Sunset Boulevard remained cordoned off Sunday morning for several blocks following the incident, which unfolded overnight.

Authorities said officers on patrol came upon a suspect involved in an altercation with a group of men in the area. That's when, police say, the first officer-involved shooting occurred.

It remains unclear if the suspect was initially struck, but police say he fled on foot. A second officer-involved shooting occurred a couple of blocks away at a gas station.

Police said a handgun was recovered from the scene.

No officers were struck, and it remains unclear whether the suspect, who is suspected of being armed, fired at police.

"The only one we have in custody right now is that suspect," said Lt. Chris Ramirez of the Los Angeles Police Department. "We're still asking if we have anyone that might have witnessed that altercation, who might have been part of that altercation, or saw something, to please come forward."

The suspect remained hospitalized, though his current condition was not known. He underwent surgery.
