Mayor Garcetti Urges Locals To Pass Proposition That Would Help House LA's Homeless

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Mayor Eric Garcetti spoke out at the All Saints Episcopal Church on behalf of thousands of homeless men, women and children urging the congregation to get involved.

"Those of you who are landlords who have apartments in this difficult housing market, we have too many individuals who have housing vouchers but can't find a place to live," Garcetti said.

It's a message the Mayor has been preaching about for years -- but this year, he's asking Angelenos to foot part of the bill.

It's called Ballot Measure HHH, a 1.2 billion bond paid for by an increase in property tax.

"You have to make sacrifices sometimes and I don't think that's a super big sacrifice that people can't make," voter Bill Givens said.

The city would use the extra money to build 10,000 housing units for the estimated 30,000 people on LA's streets.

If approved, HHH would increase your property tax about $10 for every $100,000 worth of value for the next 29 years.

"Even if I have to pay more money in taxes, (it's) to help people get off the street," Cherylnn Pope said.

And in a house known for giving, it was hard to find anyone who would admit they would but no.

However, HHH only pays for construction -- salaries, services and furniture are not included.

In one of the most expensive cities in the country, getting homeowners to pay an extra $30 a year is certainly going to be a tough sell.

Despite what people say, how they vote in November may very well tell a whole different story.
