Man Accused Of Shearing Artesia Fire Hydrant Reportedly Called 911 Before Crash

ARTESIA (CBSLA.com) — Authorities say a driver took out a fire hydrant in Artesia overnight, causing a geyser.

The incident unfolded early Sunday at Artesia and Pioneer boulevards, and caused firefighters to respond to the scene to turn off the hydrant.

Deputies say the suspected driver ran away, and said it was for his own safety. He had reportedly called 911 before the crash, and said he was being chased.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
